Diabetes question - Halle Berry

I guess all the commercials (and panning) of the new Halle Berry film
Catwoman have got me thinking -- how can someone like Halle Berry, who is
in absolutely perfect physical condition, have diabetes? I don't understand
it. I thought diabetes was linked to weight, but it obviously isn't in her
case. What makes it happen? Is it an unavoidable genetic legacy?

Keeping in shape helps control the diabetes. Works for both Type 1 and Type
2.

Halle Berry is a Type I. Her body took out its own beta cells so she
can't make enough insulin anymore. It's an autoimmune thing.

To be honest, I haven't really paid that much attention to it, although it
runs in my dad's family. I have heard of juvenile diabetes and adult onset.
I heard that juvenile was far deadlier.

Halle Berry is T2 diabetic, and controls it through diet, exercise, stress
management and insulin -- as all we T2's could if we were dedicated enough.
Here is a short exerpt from www.diabetesmovies.com:

"While filming Living Dolls, Berry collapsed, having entered a diabetes
coma. Her doctors noted that stress probably caused the disease to manifest
itself early in her life rather than in her later years. Although doctors
told her that she would be insulin-dependent the rest of her life, she has
improved her health through diet, exercise, meditation, and low-stress
activities."
