I'll reply to my own post.

I'm really going backwards here. Before Xmas I was losing weight steadily.
I'm now 8 pounds above my low and increasing. My exercise stays fairly
constant so I must be eating more calories than I use to.

The thing is before, when I was losing weight, I never monitored my
calories. I ate fairly lean during the week then on the weekend I'd pig out
a bit. I only weighed myself once a month.

Now I feel that I'm more obsessed with the whole thing. I use Fitday. I
calculate how many calories per day and per week, and the average per day in
a week. It's become more about numbers than listening to the needs of my
body.

I remember seeing Margaret Cho in one of her stand up sets in which she
talks about her obsession with dieting and how one day she just decided to
'take herself out of the game'. It does feel like a bit of a game to me too.
And at this point a game that I'm losing. Can anyone understand this?

So I'm going back to what *was* working for me and won't be monitoring or
posting my calories anymore. Maybe that's something that's helpful to some
people but doesn't work for me. I'll still post from time to time but for
now ...

Adios!

You could still check in and let us know how it's going. Ig may be
right that you're trying to achieve a lower weight than is desirable
for your body, which would certainly make it more challenging. I hope
your change of plan works for you. Maybe it will help cut back on the
"binges", which would be a good thing, since I think they were getting
you discouraged.

I think you and I may be in a similar position. We're not overweight but
still struggling to have or maintain the body that we want. And the thing is
dieting *is* a struggle. It's like a constant battle that I've taken on. I
get tired of it. I realize it's not how I want to be living.

I have a vision of the person I want to be. Instead of dieting to get to
that person I feel I should just try being that person everyday, acting like
that person would act. You said it -
depending a lot on my frame of mind

Thank you for your good wishes. I hope your mileage varies too

BCJ, this all makes a huge amount of sense to me. Although you
haven't told us a lot about yourself, I assume you are a person like
me who is subject to binge/dieting behaviour with the consequent
fluctuations in weight and tendency to obsess about food and weight
issues.

I've had so much practice at this game that I know how to follow my
WOE without logging everything. Although at present I'm using Fitday,
I spend as little time as possible on the logging in and also on
analysing what I've eaten. I just glance at the total calories and
the percentage of fat/protein/carbs. At the end of the day, I may
very occasionally not have a further snack because this would take me
over 1500, but most days the calories just look after themselves and
always fall somewhere between 1300 and 1500.

It is a recorded fact for me that the longest times I've been able to
sustain consistent weight loss and stick to my WOE for months on end
are those when I've recorded nothing about my food intake (except
roughly totting it up in my head through the course of the day and
paying a bit more attention to very calorie dense foods), and have
avoided weighing myself more than once a month.

I hope what you've decided will work for you - I don't see why it
shouldn't, but just because you're not posting about your food intake
any more doesn't mean you need to stop posting altogether, so I hope
we'll hear from you again.

What works for some doesn't work for all. I was pretty burned out on all of
the weight loss stuff just over a year ago and took some time away from
things and found it to be quite helpful to get some perspective. I got
really sick of my entire existence revolving around all of the weight I
lost. Best of luck to you.

Jenn
