nutrition labels: pointless, useless, or misleading?
wrote:
Nutrition labels in the U.S. are to me quite worthless for indicating the nutrition content of foods. snip How much information do you think they can fit on a can or box? You want more info? Do some work..... http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ There are also toll free numbers on almost every packaged/canned food where you can call and request additional nutritional info. -- Jeri "Change is inevitable, except from vending machines." |

Actually, upon further research, it wasnt mandatory in Canada for most large prepackaged food companies to have a nutrional label until Dec 2005 and for smaller companies it doesnt come into effect until Dec 2007. So yeah I am in the right century. ;-) http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/label-e...n/index_e.html http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/label-e...l_flash_e.html Maybe its because Canada has such a wealth of imported goods, which may not have nurtritional labelling, it just struck me that alot of what I picked up didnt have the usual nutrition panel on it (and I was in SaveOns and or Safeway about a year ago). I was also surprised that they dont carry as much lowfat stuff, especially dairy products, like we have here in the US. Just my observation, and of course it may vary in your town (I was in Maple Ridge outside of Vancouver BC). joanne (the other one) ;-) |

It doesn't list everything, but for many foods it provides much more information than the food labels. Smart Start label: 3g total fat, 0.5g saturated fat, 0g trans fat USDA database: 3.2g total fat, 0.6g saturated fat, 0.1g trans fat, 1.1g monounsaturated fat, 1.4g polyunsaturated fat. 335/319/215 |
