Default Schools and nuitrition education

I graduated from the K-12 environment in 1996. I was very, very poorly educated
on nuitrition, exercize and such. I have to wonder if schools are still poorly
educating students inthis area, or things are getting better? My theory would
be that things are getting much worse than in my day. I watched this Super
Size me film and saw some evidence to support my theory.

Sadly it took a mistake phone call from a blood test Dr. to get my act
together. The Doctors in a blood test lab in my area got my chart confused
with anothers and called me by mistake one day and told me that my blood sugar
levels were very high and I was in grave danger unless I saw them immediately.
It took a phone to clear up the mess which may have saved the life of the
real patient with the problem. Later I had my own blood and Cholesteral levels
tested which verified that I am in good health (despite my obese weight being
at 240 pounds).

However since that day I have been striving to eat well. However I do fall
back from time to time. Yesterday I ate In N Out, and today Pizza. In N Out
is not terribly bad for you like Mc.Donals, Burger King or wherever. But
typically I eat at Subway.

Would you believe that at my son's elementary school they go through a
buffet line and get to serve themselves? My husband and I went there to eat
lunch with them, and we couldn't believe that first graders are allowed to
take the food they want! Just the sanitation involved in that is
disturbing. I've never seen anything like it in my life. No wonder school
lunch costs $1.50. Imagine all of the waste. My sons are 2nd and 3rd
graders now. When I was in those grades lunch was 30 cents. I remember
because I took my money in one of those tiny little tupperware bowl
keychains and it just fit. lol! The girls in here will probably remember
those. :-) Also, lunch when I was in high school....1990 was 90cents. As
far as I recall, luch prices got higher as you went up in schools. I hate
to think what the boys will have to pay when they get to high school. I'm
gonna have to tell them to just lick the walls or something! Anyone have
any average prices of high school lunches in their areas?

In the El Paso ISD (Texas) full price meals for students are $1.75 for
grades 6-12 and $1.65 for grades K-5. Lower income families can
qualify for reduced cost ($0.40) or free meals.

Oddly enough, my 8 year old was diagnosed just this August with juvenile
diabetes. Type one....he's not overweight, just autoimmune system
shutdown.
