Default Ketosis question

I know that I probably should already know the answer to this but I've
loaned out my DANDR to a friend and I can't look it up.

I know that ketosis isn't a bad thing, but do you have to BE in ketosis in
order to lose weight? If you can lose weight w/o being in ketosis, does
this mean you aren't losing fat? I've always been curious but I don't
remember this part in my DANDR. If it was there, I don't think I really
understood.

TIA!

The process of burning fat is lipolysis. Ketosis is a secondary process
that occurs at a very low carb level.

Quoting from my copy of DADR: "Ketosis occurs when you are taking in a very
low level of carbohydrate from the food you eat, as you will during much of
the weight loss phases of Atkins."

And I apologize for accidentally sending this through email.

Lots of people lose weight on high carb low fat diets, so you don't
need to be "in ketosis" to lose fat. Some people just have a hard
time doing it, and find that ketosis makes it easier to set up the
chemical processes involved in fat metabolism.

Actually, though, I think pretty much everyone on a hypocaloric diet
goes in and out of ketosis throughout the day as caloric demand
exceeds caloric supply.

No, you don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight. You have to eat fewer
calories that you use/excrete. If you biked 100 miles a day and burnt
5,000 calories but ate 4,500 calories (all in carbs, say), you'd lose
weight even though you aren't in ketosis.

The process of burning fat is lipolysis. Ketosis is a secondary process
that occurs at a very low carb level.

Quoting from my copy of DADR: "Ketosis occurs when you are taking in a

of
the weight loss phases of Atkins."

And I apologize for accidentally sending this through email.
