OT Question to Susan Jones-Anderson
(why me? LOL) No sweety. You can not feed your chickens dogfood for any prolonged period of time. It would do in a pinch overnight or something but they need cracked grain, laying pellets and to be honest, insects. If you absolutely can not get feed for them go to a local pet shop and pick up parakeet feed or some other type of bird food. The laying pellets provide the protein and minerals that make the egg shells hard. They are birds, they have a craw which they grind up grain feed with to get nutrients. Find a local feed store. Susan who RANCHES. Not Farms. 260/219/160 --- 1month 5days 8:24hours of being smoke-free, 1,415 cigs not smoked, $261.78 saved, 4day 21:55hours of my life saved "Ignoramus11008" wrote in message ... Can I feed dog food to chickens? I have egg laying hens and I am running out of layer feed. Living in suburbia, I do not have easy access to the cheap chicken feed for layers. Iowa is too far to drive for it. I am considering feeding dog food to chicken. Dog food is apparently made of various cereals and rendered animal products (carcasses of dead animals, hair, ligaments, cow stomachs with contents, etc). It made me think that dog food, being cheap, can be a good feed for my chicken. Layer chicken obviously need a lot of protein becase they lay protein laden eggs. Any thoughts? Is dog food made with too much sodium? i |

OT Question to Susan Jones-Anderson
Just a thought from my perspective. My "industry" (foodbanking) received
warnings that dog and cat food should NOT be given to livestock (pigs) because of possible contamination. (Food that is not fit for human consumption is cycled to a local pig farmer.) Since you eat the eggs your chickens produce, I'd think twice, or even three times. Try to find an Agway! Ann -- "Feel free to send more.
