Default Water weight...Good or bad sign?!?

I am 20 years of age,and weigh 275 lbs.I have started a diet
consisting of the first 3 days of the week eating about 1000 calories
without exercise, then the next 4 days eating about 2500 calories and
doing cardio for an hour, sometimes half hour cardio and half hour
weightlifting.Now,after the first 3 days of eating 1000 calories,i've
lost about 10 pounds, and I know for a fact that its water weight, but
when i continued the 4 days of eating 2500 calories and doing the
exercise,the weight has not come back.Now I'm wondering,if i were to
proceed to the 2nd week of this diet, will I lose a considerable amount
of weight,im not necessarily saying 10 pounds, but something close to 5
pounds, and that being fat?Since the water weight is gone, meaning there
is no more glycogen to get the energy from, then will it attack the
fat?The doctor who told me to follow this diet plan told me a woman
lost 30 pounds in a month using this method, and has not gained it
back. She has kept the weight off,so I can interpret that since the
glycogen stores were empty, the body has gone into fat burning
mode.Your comments/opinions and suggestions are appreciated.Thanks for
your time.

First thing is stop what you are doing. Workout at least
half an hour EVERY day, and keep the number of calories the
same EVERY day.

Bingeing is a bad idea whether you're talking about alchohol
or food, and skipping meals is also one way to sabotage your
weight loss plans.

Get another doctor. The one you have obviously is clueless
about eating and good health.

Sorry, incorrect. Many people find that alternating weight-lifting and
cardio days is a great way to get in their exercise. I personally lift
weights for about 45 minutes 3 days a week and do interval training for
about 20 minutes three different days a week. It is a great system for
startling your body into learning how to burn fat.

Bingeing is a bad idea whether you're talking about alchohol
or food, and skipping meals is also one way to sabotage your
weight loss plans.

Periodic refeeds keep you from having a leptin response that can sometimes
cause binging. The Rotation Diet from the 80's was built on this premise
and there is some basis for it. And, as Igor pointed out, 2500 calories
isn't exactly binging for a 300 pound man.

Get another doctor. The one you have obviously is clueless
about eating and good health.

Please don't listen to Patty Heil's advice. She is a perfectly nice woman
but she doesn't appear to have learned anything new since 1980.

One of the basic premises we've learned on how to construct a diet at
which you'll fail and regain all the weight is to construct one where you
can't wait to quit it. A diet where you eat 1000 calories and don't
exercise doesn't seem like one you should continue for the rest of your
life.

A better choice might be to do the 2500 calories six days a week and
occasionally, maybe 1x a week, eat your old way just for a refeed and to
handle cravings. This way you'd be teaching yourself how to eat when you
actually GET to 180 pounds (or whatever you're aiming for.)

Now,after the first 3 days of eating 1000 calories,i've
lost about 10 pounds, and I know for a fact that its water weight, but
when i continued the 4 days of eating 2500 calories and doing the

What are your fat loss goals? If you are trying to look good for a
photo shoot on the 8th then this might be a good plan and your water
weight issues are pertinant. If you're trying to lose 95 pounds of fat
then there is no point in caring about this or discussing it.

Now I'm wondering,if i were to
proceed to the 2nd week of this diet, will I lose a considerable amount
of weight,im not necessarily saying 10 pounds, but something close to 5
pounds, and that being fat?Since the water weight is gone, meaning there

I really, really hate hearing people sit around projecting their future
fat loss. It's part of the same mindset that says, "I'm going to diet to
X number and then stop this silly way of eating so I can regain it all
now." I did that in my twenties, too, and ended up fatter than ever. I'd
love to see you be able to step off this merry-go-round and learn how to
lose the fat for good.

The doctor who told me to follow this diet plan told me a woman
lost 30 pounds in a month using this method, and has not gained it
back. She has kept the weight off,so I can interpret that since the
glycogen stores were empty, the body has gone into fat burning

I think what your body does when the glycogen reserves are gone is highly
variable. It can use your next calorie to provide blood sugar to the
brain, it can use it to restore glycogen reserves, it can use it to fuel
current energy needs or it can store it as fat. Or it could store it as
fat while burning some muscle for fuel!

People who are very overweight often have more fat-storing enzymes than
fat-burning enzymes, meaning they have an over-active insulin response
that sweeps calories directly into fat cells even though those calories
could better be used elsewhere. It also means that their muscles aren't
used to demanding energy and the enzymes that convert fat into energy are
few and far between.

The best way to increase your fat-burning enzymes is to make your body to
startling things: do high intensity interval training, for example, where
your body suddenly requests lots of energy out of the blue. Or weight
lifting, where suddenly your muscles are screaming they need energy to
repair the damage you did yesterday.

The best way to overcome insulin resistance is to pay attention to your
glycemic load in your diet: choose meals that are high in fiber, protein
and healthy fats. Eat small meals/snacks every three hours or so.

Your doctor is not usually the best place to get weight-loss help. The
doctor knows what we know, but doesn't usually know how to convey the
truth to you in such a way as you'll actually do what you need to do. So
doctors tell you a trick hoping you can at least implement the trick
blindly.

The answer, though, is this:

1.) Eat less
2.) Exercise more
3.) Repeat
4.) Forever.

I really recommend you do some reading. Great books I've read are the
Covert Baily books, Barry Sears books, Walter Willet's book, and my
personal favorite, "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips.

Good luck,

Wendy

Where does she get her info? I at least read the daily newspapers even
if the studies I sometimes post are not major or new.

What is she thinking?

Stay the course, Mack. You're doing super! I never feel as though layers
of fat are disappearing, but sometimes I almost convince myself that I can
feel the fat reserves in my body burning up when I'm exercising.

I don't konw that it's good or bad. I know that in the frist 3-4 weeks
I lost quite a bit of weight and then it leveled off for the next 25
pounds or so. Then it got a bit slower but again, leveled off for the
next 15 pounds. The most recent 10 were pretty slow but I know that
there was a lot going on because my BF% was dropping quite a bit during
that time.

Like you, I drink a lot of water -- 16 oz before work (if I go to the
gym that morning, another 20 oz there). I bring a 32 oz Nalgene bottle
of water to work and I drink that before leaving. Then I drink at least
3-4 more 16 oz classes at night.

1000 calories seems pretty low. You may consider bumping that up a bit
-- at least in your mind. I mean, think of a budget. While you want to
be within budget and it's OK to be below budget, you don't always need
to be below budget. OTOH, I'm not advocating eating when you are not
hungry. Do you know what I mean?
