I would be reluctant if it is the same, even though we all know she is a
leader it is personal what you make and I think asking her to talk about it
is kinda pushing the boundaries, I do not discuss what I make even with
friends who would not judge/be jealous, Lee

I'm curious -- is it different in different locations? Is that why
you're reluctant to share that info here?

That's an interesting sociological thing. My mother absolutely refused
to discuss personal/family finances with anybody (me included; the
farthest she'd go was telling me which income bracket to select when I
had to fill out college forms), citing None of Their Business. My
grandmother didn't have exactly the same ideals: she wouldn't tell me
all the details, but she'd give me approximate numbers, once I was old
enough to understand money (by which time she was on a fixed income
anyway, which may be relevant).

My father, meanwhile, would talk about bills and expenses and average
job income (again, once I was old enough; he was a contractor), and my
stepmother did the same thing. My stepbrother was always happy to
discuss his finances, and my sister likewise. My husband is also more
than happy to talk about it, as are most of our friends down here, at
least in reasonably general 'this new tv was a thousand dollars, our
checking account can more than handle it, but we're holding off on other
expensive stuff for a while' and 'he just got a $3/hr raise, he gets
more than anybody in the company, I just wish our pool wasn't costing us
$x/mo'-type way.

So I'm wondering, is it an age issue, or a 'cultural mores where you
grew up' issue, or a combination of the two? Is it related to how
likely you are to discuss your political beliefs with others (from my
side it seems to be)? For that matter, is willingness to discuss daily
finances the same as willingness to discuss your wage, or do preferences
there seem unrelated? Fascinating thing. I wonder if they've done studies.

I am sure there are studies, I grew up in a house where we knew all the
details as age appropriate, but that is different to me than those not in
your immediate family. I don't mind generalities, I had to pay X for Y, i
had to save for X months, and things like No i do not have credit cards on
purpose, it just seems that the net is not the place to discuss such a
thing, unless of course you are on a financial board, mores is a bit strong,
but like that, on another group we were discussing drinking preferences and
how many people push, food, drinks, adult and otherwise on people, and keep
pushing when the offer of food/drink is declined, and the inevitable, why
not, Lee

I apologize if I made anyone uncomfortable with my question. I was
just curious for myself and I thought this forum would be anonymous
enough. I was obviously wrong in that assumption. Thanks anyway and
sorry again.

not a problem, some of us are sensitive about things that others are not, on
another group a vegan poster is talking about how she has to eat before
going to functions because family members "forget" she doesn't eat any
animal products, another one was discussing the fact that people push adult
beverages/food you do not eat on you then ask why you don't drink/eat
