Yesterday I read in the newpaper that they will, in december2005, bannish

the number of carb it contains!!!! They say that there are no proof that
low-carb products are good for the health and that's why they will bannish
them!!! I think that's completly ridiculous! We have the right to decide

I don't see that they will not write the amount of carbs on the package.
They don't want to market the products as low carb. It is stupid, but the
people that are on LC, can still read the labels for carb counts.

I think this violates freedom of speech. Really stupid and people should be
able to make up their own minds if they want to buy an Atkins approved
product or one that advertises low carb.

Hi Annie,
Funny you mention this, my doctor and I were talking about this today, but
I'm afraid you have the wrong facts or at least misread them. They are
going to stop labelling the low carb products as low carb specialty foods

on
the front of the packages, they won't be able to say Atkins endorsed and
they are not changing any nutrition labels.

Does Canada protect Freedom of Speech?
Anyway, Freedom of Speech doesn't apply to fraud or spreading false
information about a product. If you try to sell snake oil as a cure for
cancer, you're not protected by the constitution. Marketing a high carb
product as "low carb" just because you cut the total amount of carbs by
20% is fraud. Currently, if I made candies with only 80g of sugar per
100g, I could market them as "low carb", since the usual recipe is 100g
per 100g. Likewise, marketing products as "diet" because they were low
in fat (and very very high in fast acting carbs) was a kind of fraud
too. Likewise, market oil as carb free is a kind of fraud too, since
it's a natural property of all oils, not a specific quality of the product.
You have all the nutritionnal data you need in the nutrition information
chart, and this one is regulated by law. The nutritionnal claims that
are anywhere else on the package are not regulated. But people could be
led to believe that they carry the same truth value as the legal
nutritionnal information.
