2nd week on a new job and their having a potluck lunch this friday. I was
just wondering how other people have handled or would handle this kind of
situation.

Well, first I'd talk to your workmates to confirm how big a
contribution you're expected to bring and what sort of things are
usually brought. That would give you a feel for how this is going to
be handled. For instance, I used to work in a company that did this
sort of thing regularly and we had a roster as to what week you were
expected to provide food - we each brought something in about once a
month on average.

Then I'd bring a good-sized serving of something LC that so that you
*KNOW* you can eat it. Devilled eggs, perhaps. Or a plate of ham and
cheese roll-ups. Perhaps some tasty LC dip with a platter of
vegetable sticks (celery, carrot and the like). A selection of
cheeses (with crackers on the side for those who are not avoiding
carbs) is usually an acceptable offering.

The thing that always caused me problems is when our company would have
little celebration parties and want to serve cake and icecream to everyone.
I just explained that I am on a low carb diet and I can't eat any of it. A
couple of people thought I was an jerk for not joining in.

Oh well, I quite Corporate America and went into business for myself

I bring my own food and don't participate. I've worked with many of these
people for over 10 yrs so they know me well and they are not offended that I
don't join in. I still eat with them, I just eat my own food.

Just went to a potluck last night. I brought a Greek salad. I kinda

cruised the other food - didn't see much that would work for me, so I just
ate some of my salad and a piece of cheese and meat. No big deal, you have
to learn to be firm however when others press. Fessing up to low carbing
will usually stop most people, except the jerks. Those ones you smile at
(remember new job!) and avoid.

Take something along that is absolutely Low Carb and delish.. that way
if all the other choices are questionable.. you have what you brought
with you to fall back on

Other than that... Enjoy and have a good time !

Provide LC for your contribution - Pick and choose LC to eat - If anyone
asks, tell them you LC. If they push or make an issue, you know who to avoid
in the future. -- :-) BJ

congratulations on your new job!

As for potlucks, I always take something low carb so that I know I will have
something good to eat. Usually there are a lot of low carb foods available.

ideas:

7 layer salad (everyone always loves this)
deviled eggs
roll ups with ham, cream cheese and a pickle or green onion inside
chicken
geesh, my brain isn't working this morning. Sorry i can't come up with more
ideas right now.

most people don't care about what YOU are eating, they are more concerned with
what they are going to eat. If they question you, just say you're avoiding
sugar.

good luck

Thanks for all of your tips.
I guess I'm leaning towards just politely bowing out.
Up to now I've been leaving work for my lunch anyways.
Maybe I'm just looking for the polite way of handling it.
