Pen,

That is a very perceptive thought. I have often speculated that maybe the
diagnosis of depression might instead be adrenelene depletion.

How did you find out about 5-htp and l-tyrosine?

I can't recall an exact source. I do a LOT of research. To be honest, I
suspect it's tied more to low thryoid than adrenaline, but all that stuff is
pretty much tied together in the long run.

Have you used it?

Yes.

Does it increase your metabolism?

Not sure.

Does it help you in the fat burning process?

Not sure.

Does it make you feel more alert?

No, just calmer and more placid ;-) Although I must admit my sex drive is
perking up nicely!

Peace,
Pen

Just curious.

Question, folks...

When I first went on low-carb, I had great results with my sanity - I
am finding this has tapered off quite a bit and I'm back to my "old
me" more and more, albeit a thinner and more energetic old me. Because
LC is working great for my weight and blood sugar, I have enough
reason to keep doing it.

Here's the deal.

My doctor is trying me on a low dose (12.5 mg) of Paxil CR. The side
effect of any anti-depressant though that worries me the most, is the
possibility of weight gain. Practically no other side effect scares me
as much - I have this horrible fear it's going to make me swell up
like a blimp. Mind you, the obsessing and working myself into a snit
over worrying about it, is part of the reason they're putting me on
the stuff to begin with.

I've lost about 30 lbs now - I'm down to 146 from 178 - and I don't
want to lose all my hard work.

It's not for depression, it's to deal with some of the OCD, serious
anxiety type issues, and autistic type overload issues I have. But
I'll do some homework on the 5htp.

You can't gain weight if you don't overeat.

It won't make you "swell up like a blimp" if you keep eating and
exercising the way you have been doing. I promise.

Also, and this is a point that sometimes people forget, the fact that some
people have a side effect from a medication doesn't always mean that
everyone will. I had to be on steriods for a short time after an allergic
reaction. Everyone warned me to watch out for the raging munchies; I lost
my appetite almost completely and lost a bit of weight while I was on
them.

Ditto for prozac. I know some people have reported increased appetite on
it, but my diet doctor gave it to me for its appetite *supressing* side
effect and again I found my appetite decreased when taking it.

If I were you, if I thought the paxil was something that I should
otherwise take, then I'd start the prescription, know there's a
possibility of the side effect but don't *expect* it to make you eat more
(so it doesn't become a self-fulfilling prophecy) and then see if they
benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

And good luck to you in finding what works for you.

Martha

Wrong. You can gain weight (water and/or fat) for any number of medical
reasons that don't have to do with overeating.
