reasons that don't have to do with overeating.

can't gain fat if you don't overeat. The definition of "overeating"
is the crux of the matter. If you need to take Prednisone or have
some other situation come along that lowers your overall metabolic
rate the same amount of food intake as before will cause weight gain.
The new circumstances call for lower food intake, and therefore one
would be overeating - eating more food than required for maintenance
of bodyweight under the new circumstances - if one gained fat. The
result defines the terminology used to quantify the intake as
excessive. See?
