Default Dining Out

I have most of the eating thing down pat. Hope so after a year. Lots of
filling veggies, watch the calories, eat healthy blah blah blah. But I
still can't seem to figure out what to do when I go out to eat.
Admittedly this only happens about once or twice every few months but I
find myself just staring at the menu obsessing. Plus portion sizes are
out of control in restaurants.

Constantly weighing calories in my mind. I end up frozen and end up
ordering something like a boring salad. And even that is too big.

Say you went to a restaurant that served seafood what would you get? or
a mexican place, or a steak house?

Guess I'm just looking for basic rules in eating out.

Avoid chessey sauces. Avoid white sauces, Stay with chicken breast. Pasta
OK, take 1/2 home for tomorrow dinner. Easy on the bread. Mexican?
Hmmm..Tooo much fat and calories. Salads, not dressing have a HUGE amount
of fat. Bring your own. The fat free stuff is pretty good.

Resturants want you to come back. They load up the fat and calories for
you...No extra charge.

I think it's more a matter of PORTION CONTROL but others
can answer with more expertise. I think it's so important to count
calories because I am proving it every day by eating MORE and
yet losing weight and body fat. I just keep my calories at a defit.

I ask to get a box with the food. I put half my meal in the box before I
start eating.

Eat grilled meats and seafoods, tell them to skip the butter!

Grilled meats - easy at a steak house. Either get a small steak (like a 6
oz filet mignon) or a grilled chicken breast. Avoid or limit the bread, get
steamed veggies on the side. Seafood? Steamed crab, or grilled fish of any
kind. Mexican may be more difficult as they don't always specify if they
put lard in the beans, and the food tends to be carb heavy with tortillas
and whatnot. Italian is also more difficult, but places like Olive Garden
specify their lighter selections, and if you avoid the cream-based sauces
and bread sticks, you should be ok.

Unless I'm in a conscious splurge mode -- which I'll do for
one-of-a-kind gourmet restaurants -- I'll order grilled meat or fish
(generally filet mignon for meat or salmon for fish). If the portion
is large and it's feasible (like I'm not out of town or something),
I'll take half of it home and put it in a salad the next day.

Neither. I just go to the salad bar. Since restaurants will never serve
the food I feel comfortable eating, I eat only the salads. Other people
I'm with don't seem to mind. Even with salad bars of course you have to
chose wisely or you will overeat. Even McDonalds has a side salad that
has twenty cals. That is about the only thing there that is low calorie
and completely healthy. They cost $1, and I usually buy two if they are
fresh. The buffets like Cici's and Mr. Gatti's has adequate salad bars
as well. Another thing about eating out. You really have no good idea
how many calories are in the food unless you prepare it themselves.
People do really stupid things like adding butter to brocolli. dkw

Beer or wine (light beer if you can choke it down)
Sirloin/baked potato/salad/veg. Eat half the meat, half the potato, all
the veg/salad ask for only sour cream and only use a TB. lo fat or fat
free salad dressing, no butter on veg.

Seafood, basically the same only salmon or seared tuna are my favorites.
Even grilled shrimp is good.

Mexican, basically impossible. I just don't go there.

Italian, noodles with marinara and a little cheese. with Grilled
chicken/shrimp/fish (sort of boring but it's protein) Salad. Sometimes
they have really good vegetables.

Watch the butter/cheese/fullfat dressings/bread/booze.

at least that's what I try to do.

them to cut on the fat, and they are happy to do so.. of course this is
California.. they're used to dieters..

Salads are good. But beware of the heavy calories and mostly fat in the
dressing. Many have good intentions with the salad and overload it with
dressing, the equivalent of a quarter pounder, in terms of FAT
