I'm getting really tired of people saying that the way they behave here
isn't reflective of the person they are in "real life."

Guess what, your interactions here are as real as anywhere else. There are
real people reading the posts we make. Real feelings get hurt. Even real
legal consequences can ensue.

I mean, would you say, "well, I'm only a bitch over the phone"? No,
because we know that phone conversations are real.

You may act differently in this forum than you do in others, but this is
just as real a reflection of who you are as that is. In fact it may be
more accurate, because this is a situation in which people think they can
act without thinking of consequences.

I actually knew a man in real life who was far different on Usenet
than face-to-face. In person, he was charming, cheerful and
gregarious. On Usenet he was (still is) a crude, hate-filled,
misogynistic asshole.

A friend of mine who also knows him floated the idea that the Usenet
persona is the real him, hidden under all the grins and back-slapping.
Considering what a horrible, horrible person he is online, we agreed
that this was very scary, indeed.

I know that I often come off a lot more serious and snarky here than
in person -- I'm sarcastic, sure, but I also tend to grin and laugh a
lot, which puts it into perspective. But if someone's personality is
vastly different in online communications than in person, I'd wager
they have some really scary problems.

I was wondering if I was the only one who thought this.

Me too. I'm exactly the same person online as in real life, except that in
real life I'm louder and I smell better.

I'm much thinner on Usenet, myself.

to increase its velocity, until you hit a limit at C. This energy has
to come from somewhere; in this case, from the food's nutritional value.
