Water, Coffee, & Crystal Light
I'm confused.
We're supposed to drink 50 gallons or so of water every day. But for some reason, if we add anything to the water--like coffee or Crystal Light--well, that doesn't count. How come? Black coffee doesn't have any carbs. Nor does Crystal Light (according to the package). Specifically, why don't both of these drinks count towards our water requirement? Thanks. Charley |

Because they contain caffeine, aspartame, or sodium compounds they are less beneficial than water alone. They count, but they don't work as well. Because of the 'stuff' included, our bodies look at it like food.
Coffee is also a diuretic. Charley Kyd wrote: I'm confused. We're supposed to drink 50 gallons or so of water every day. Well, it all depends on your WOE. For example, caffeine is not acceptable on the Atkins plan (http://atkins.com/helpatkins/newfaq/...itional.ht ml). In addition, I personally do not count caffeinated beverages (no, I'm not an Atkins follower ;-)) in my daily water intake because caffeine is a diuretic. I bring a 32 oz Nalgene container of water in to work and have that in addition to a 16 oz glass with breakfast and a 20 oz water bottle at the gym. Since that's over 64 oz right there I don't bother to track any water I have at dinner, etc. I'm sure that you'll find a strategy that works well for you. Good luck! -- jmk in NC |

"Judy" wrote in message .com... Because of the 'stuff' included, our bodies look at it like food. Coffee is also a diuretic. Interestingly, several authoritative sources I have read lately claim this just not so, and I have never found it to be that way. Charley Kyd wrote: I'm confused. Water, Coffee, & Crystal Light
There is no evidence that I have seen that we really need to drink all of
this water in the first place. Also, I have not found that it makes a difference to weight loss or to appetite. So, while it is clear that on a LC diet which is high in fiber (hopefully) one should get plenty of fluids to keep things moving, it is not clear to me that one has to worry so much about where the liquid comes from. So, I don't pay attention to the notion of one must drink 200 gallons or so of water every day. I get my liquid from coffee, Fruit 2O, and diet vanilla pepsi or coke, or tea! The only thing I do is pay attention to how many carbs are in that stuff -- so all of the coffee I drink I count that, plus any bulky AS used, plus the half-n-half. Basically, i count everything. And when I do everything right (control kcals & carbs & eat under maintenance & exercise), I lose weight. YMMV. Do what works for you. And if what you do doesn't work, modify your game plan til you find what does work. Charley Kyd wrote: :: I'm confused. :: :: We're supposed to drink 50 gallons or so of water every day. Water, Coffee, & Crystal Light
Just remember that caffeinated beverages are not a good source of fluid
as they are diuretics. Alcohol is also a diuretic. In addition, there is some evidence that water consumption can help prevent bladder cancer and colon cancer.
