Default South Beach Diet: Did you lose 8-14 pounds in 2 weeks?

I have been on the South Beach Diet for 5 days now and have been
following it closely. The book states categorically "you will lose
8-14 pounds in the first two weeks". This claim sounds a little bogus
to tell you the truth. I believe I will lose some weight but I've
been on a lot of diets and never lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks.

I'm going to wait until 2 weeks is up to weigh myself and see but I'd
like to hear from other people what their experiences were.

I gave up sugar before going on any official "diet", and I lost 8 pounds in 6
days. That's out of a target of 26 pounds altogether.

A week after that, I went on a diet of my own design that followed South Beach
rather closely, although with the occasional Atkins-ish touch. I lost another
5 pounds over the next two weeks, which put me halfway to goal. At that point
I slowed down, but it's okay because I'm still losing, and I feel healthier and
my clothes fit.

So no, I don't find 8 pounds in 2 weeks to be incredible, because I lost that
in less than 1 week. OTOH, I don't think it's wise to promise a specific
weight loss, so I understand your skepticism. Here's what I'd promise for a
low-carb diet: "You'll feel better, you'll lose inches, your skin will clear
up, you'll sleep better, you won't be hungry, your overall mood will improve,
and odds are your doctor will find all that alarming because s/he got crappy
nutrition education in medical school and therefore thinks white flour and
sugar are good for you. And you will lose weight if you follow the plan." But
no number.

Good luck.

Btw, do you feel better, etc.? Because it's about more than just the pounds.

It's pretty restrictive the first 2 weeks, so I think it's entirely
likely to lose that much.

Absolutely not true. I know people who've lost at well over that rate for a
period of time, eventually slowing but still overall losing 2 or 2+ pounds per
week when averaged out, and they've kept the weight off for a period of years.
And in the first 2 weeks of a low-carb diet, losing over 2 pounds per week is
pretty likely.

I lost exactly 8 by the end of two weeks. In two months I've lost 17lbs and
never feel hungry.

I was an ex-Atkins guy. Got tired of no pasta (lol). I was off of it for 6
months before I started a serious gain back. One year later, I started the
South Beach (1 week into it) and have lost 6 lbs in the first 8 days. I am
now eating 3 meals a day (instead of the two large ones) and drinking twice
the fluids. I DO NOT believe all of the weight loss is water, because my 40
inch waist, has gone down 1 inch already.
I am hoping that the South Beach diet, by adding in some of the things I
REALLY love, will help me to stay on the diet. I really want to get back to
170 (from the 215 I started at).
Mark me a believer!

I lost 9 pounds during those two weeks on South Beach. I've lost 35 so far
overall.

If you only have a few pounds to lose, you might lose less or nothing at all
during those two weeks. Phase I is not the diet, just as Induction on
Atkins is not the diet. You get off of carbs on Phase I.

The diet is Phase II and I've lost 2 pounds a week on average so far on
Phase II. I expect that number to do down as the amount I need to lose goes
down.
