Default FINALLY ANSWERS to my illness! Opinions needed

Howdy all. I have been trying on and off to do low carb for a long
time. I kept getting sick, and sicker. I would vomit, have joint pain,
all kinds of crap.... well last week I was diagnosed with Celiac
Disease. I am extrmely Gluten intolerant.

Now, I need to fix myself and was hoping someone would have
information on Low-carb and Celiac Disease??

TIA
Jason

You might find some help looking at the Specific Carbohydrate Diet at
http://www.scdiet.org/ They have a lot of information, including
recipes. SCD is very compatible with LC in general.

Best of luck.

My friend (actually my piano teacher) has Celiac Disease. One day we were
talking about food, and we noticed that she and I eat almost the same foods!
She's never been intentionally LC, just staying healthy. The only
difference, I believe, is that she eats sweets and I don't.

You should do very well on LC with Celiac Disease, Jason - good luck to you!

Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet
by Elaine Gloria Gottschall

One of the reviews:

all my reviews
I ENCOURAGE THOSE WHO ARE ILL WITH IBD TO SEE THEIR DOCTORS, AND TAKE
THEIR MEDICATIONS, WHILE EATING PLAIN GOD-GIVEN FOODS IN ORDER TO
REGAIN HEALTH AS, "BREAKING THE VICIOUS CYCLE..", BY ELAINE GLORIA
GOTTSCHALL WHO TELLS ME WHAT TO EAT AND NOT TO EAT IN THE BOOK. IT
TELLS ME ABOUT DR'S. SIDNEY VALENTINE HAAS AND SON'S DIET, "THE
SPECIFIC CARBOHYDRATE DIET" THAT ELAINE GOTTSCHALL EXPLAINS WHAT
HAPPENS WHEN WE USE THIS DIET WHEN WE HAVE IBD, IBS, CROHN'S DISEAE,
ULCERATIVE COLITIS, DIVERTICULITIS, CELIA DISEASE, CYSTIC FIBROSIS,
CHRONIC DIARRHEA AND OTHER DIGESTIVE DISEASES TO REGAIN INTESTINAL
HEALTH THROUGH, "THE SPECIFIC CARBOHYDRATE DIET".
I WAS DIAGNOSED IN 1994 WITH CROHN'S DISEASE. I HAVE BEEN IN REMISSION
SINCE 1997 WITHOUT MEDICATION EXCEPT FOLIC ACID AND FREEDA VITAMINS BY
READING THIS BOOK. I HAVE HAD IBD MORE THAN FOURTY TWO YEARS [ALL MY
LIFE, SOME FORM OR ANOTHER, STARTING WITH DIARRHEA, SPASTIC COLON,
ANGRY COLON, IBS, YOU NAME IT, ETC.].

I NEVER FELT WELL IN MY CHILDHOOD OR MY ADULT LIFE UNTIL I GOT THIS
BOOK AND IT HAS GIVEN ME BACK MY LIFE, FULL OF ENGERGY AND ALSO BEING
GRATEFUL TO GOD FOR THIS GOD SENT BOOK FOR OTHERS TO BE HEALTHY, TOO.

I AM NO LONGER ANEMIC, HAVE COLDS, EAR ACHES, INFLUENZA, PNEUMONIA,
SINUS HEADACHES; ACHES AND CRAMPS IN MY LEGS, STOMACH, OR ARM; HEART
PALPITATIONS, GALL BLADDER PROBLEMS, SKIN WORTS, OR SKIN PROBLEMS, MY
COLON IS NOT SPASTIC OR INFLAMED, NO MORE DIARRHA OR VOMITING; TEETH
DO NOT HAVE ANY MORE CAVITIES OR HAVE TO BE PULLED, OR ARE NOT LOOSE;
OR HAVE ANY MORE POCKETS IN THE GUMS OR BLEEDING GUMS. HAD TO STOP
DRIVING BECAUSE I COULD NOT TELL MY DISTANCES: BANGED MY HEAD AGAINST
THE DOOR FRAME, PUT THINGS ON THE TABLE WITH A BANG BECAUSE I THOUGHT
I HAD MORE ROOM, I AM FINE NOW. NO MORE BLOODY NOSE, YEAST INFECTION,
EAR INFECTIONS OR ATHLETE'S FEET. MY BONES ARE NOT THINNING ANY MORE
BUT GETTING STRONGER ON THIS DIET. MY WEIGHT IS GREAT TOO. ALL I
NEEDED WAS GOOD HEALTHY NUTRUTION GIVEN TO ME IN THIS BOOK.

I WAS TOLD TO FIND PSYCHIATRIC HELP AND THAT ALL THIS WAS IN MY HEAD.
WHEN IT WAS THE FOOD I WAS EATING ALL ALONG. I AM GRATEFUL AGAIN FOR
THIS BOOK TO HAVE BEEN PRINTED FOR ALL TO GET HEALTHY BECAUSE I KNOW
WHAT TO DO NOW.

THERE ARE SEVERAL WEBSITES TO GET INFORMATION FROM, AND AN E-MAIL
ADDRESS NEAR THE BACK OF THE BOOK TO CHAT ABOUT THESE DISEASES,
AND,"THE SPECIFIC CARBOOHYDRAT DIET,"WHICH I FIND VERY HELPFUL TO BE
ABLE TO TALK WITH OHTERS LIKE MYSELF.

I WISH MY GRANDMOTHER HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS BOOK.

*****

Sorry about the caps, but that is how it was written.

I have a sister-in-law who has crohn's real bad. I gave her the name
of this book years ago and she hasn't bothered to read it, too
frikkin' lazy I guess. Too dependent on what her doctor says. Now they
(her doctors) are talking about removing part of her intestines
including part of her colon, which will leave her carrying a bag for
life.

You have no idea how frustrating it is to see someone close to you so
blindly follow doctors that can do nothing. Actually they do worse
than nothing because they string you along with their pills until it
is too late to make things right again.

Don't rely on you doctor to cure you. His pills may help some symptoms
but will never make you healthy.

Read the book!!!!

My mom low-carbs with Celiac.

Everything you need to know is at http://www.celiac.com.

Make sure to go into the site index and print out the safe and unsafe foods
and additive lists. Mom was sitll having trouble for the longest time,
until she realized that there was a wheat-based chemical additive in her
'100% whey protein powder'.

Become an obsessive label reader, OBSESSIVE, and you'll be fine.

Peace,
Pen

I have a sister that suffers from IBS. Sometimes the bouts are
serious, with abdominal cramping and diarrhea that lasts for days. She has
gone to various doctors over the years and the problem still persists. I
have talked to her a number of times about how lo-carbing has cured my
ailments which included, joint pain and acid reflux. Most of what she eats
are grain based foods like pastas and sandwiches if she makes the meal
herself. She claims to be a terrible cook and the family eats lots of times
from fast food places. We don't go over to often anymore for meals because
it is always pizza or KFC. The only vegetables that she likes are potatoes
and creamed corn. She has taken some medications that seem to have helped
only temporarily. No matter what I say, she refuses to even try Atkins,
saying that lots of people she knows say it is not healthy. I don't know
what her doctors have told her, because she doesn't want to talk about it.
Perhaps they have told her the same thing but refuses to listen to them as
well. I guess then, that the only option they have is to prescribe pills if
she won't eat properly. She's quite overweight, as well as her husband, and
12 yr old son. The ironic thing about this is that she has 2 parrots and
does not feed them regular parrot bird food from the pet store. She
formulates her own blend of fruits, veggies, nuts and grains that she says
most emulates their natural diet in the wild. When I try to explain to her
about eating a natural diet for humans, she tells me to "Talk to the Hand".
It's frustrating.

I recommend the SCD diet, also. It is similar to atkins but allows
some fruit. There is an alt support chrohn's, colitis group which is
very helpful.

It's great you finally have an answer, sorry it's not an easy one.

I am still waiting for tests and doctors but I figured out on my own
that I am at least gluten-intolerant. I had the same symptoms as you,
getting worse over the past couple of years. Even eating lower-carb, I
was still eating gluten every day and it was killing me.

The diet is not so hard once you get used to it, and you feel so good.
Of course, you can be celiac and eat a very high carb diet low in
nutrition. I think that avoiding grains as much as possible is the best
idea.
