Default Weight creeping up! Danger!

ps.com...

After hovering in the 79.9 - 81.4 kg range lately, my weight has
started to creep up over the last few weeks.

This morning I was 83.4 kg!

I don't think I've been going off my diet at all, but maybe some of my
calorie "estimates" or exercise-calorie estimates have been too
optimistic.

So from this morning I'm not going to estimate ANYTHING anymore -
particularly food - and if I can't actually weigh it, or if it isn't
written on the package, I'm not going to eat it.

I'll report back how it goes...

I wouldn't worry too much as long as you are continuing your diet plan and
exercise.
There's some weird stuff that goes on that seems to become more apparent as
the weight comes off. I went from 260 lbs to just under 200 lbs and then,
without changing a thing in terms of exercise or diet, started gaining
weight (according to the scale). I "gained" approximately 5 lbs over a two
week period, then, suddenly and for no apparent reason, the weight started
dropping again. Now I am back to under 200 lbs and the trend appears to be
downward again.

I think it's primarily related to water retention and (for me) is more
obvious at 200 lbs than it was at 260 lbs. But, then again, at 260 lbs I
really was not monitoring my weight that often.

One other fact that I can confirm in my experience .... all else staying
the same ... the rate of loss slows down considerably as you shed the
excess. I now focus more on the BMI index reading on the Tanita scale I am
using than on the weight. Even when I went through the short, 5 lb weight
gain, the body fat index actually decreased slightly. (It has dropped from
39 point something at 260 lbs to 26.2 at 200 lbs).

I think you are right. Some foods are so calorie laden that you can
eat hundreds of calories in a very short time...like 10 seconds and
human nature being what it is and since it was only a couple of
mouthfuls, we forget about it in our totals. The 4 pounds you gained
took about 14,000 extra calories to put on, but that might only be a
couple of bites of certain foods in a day. Nature sure is efficient at
trying to keep us fat. dkw

It's definitely a reminder to keep oneself in check, even in
maintenance.

How is your exercise routine? You might want to ramp it up. My running
mileage is going up and up, so I can eat more than ever and still lose
weight. That doesn't mean I can go hog-wild, but I don't have to be as
strict with myself if I didn't get in 22+ running miles per week.

Thanks for your responses, people!

I was so careful yesterday - but still the scale showed a 0.4 kg
weight GAIN since yesterday. Very strange! I'm up to 83.8 kg now!

I feel like there must be something going on in my food balance or
choices that is causing this.

Or that my body's metabolism has suddenly slowed down to a crawl...

any of those could be factors, have you measured lately to see if you are
having a realignment? Lee

That could be something to do with it... Try giving the body a jolt: a
week of being totally careful and weighing everything, and then have a
week on maintenance... Or switch to Core for a wee or two.

Do people have a lot of luck on Core? When I tried it I found myself
naturally gravitating towards all the highest calorie Core items, like
pumpkin, corn, avocados and things I generally don't eat when
journaling all the calories.

The trick is to get a good variety in, and to eat until you are
comfortably full, not bursting at the seams. If you want one of those
foods, have one - but not two or three on the same day! Weigh out a
normal portion of anything you have, and if you still feel peckish, wait
20 minutes and then have an apple. Sometimes the full feeling takes a
while to click in. I'm like this, which is why I tend to stick to
points. The Points plan is also more flexible if you need to eat out a lot.

Core worked really well for both me and my wife.
We've both kept it off for 2 years now.

I never weighed or measured anything. If it was on the Core list, I
ate until I was full. I was always amazed to be eating these huge
dinners, then weigh myself the next day to find out I'd lost weight.

But I wasn't about to complain.

The key is to understand the value of your points, and spend them
wisely. And also to understand that some things on the Core list are
not unlimited...you can only have them once a day. Any more than that
and you have to assign them points.

We still eat only whole grain breads, cereals, brown rice, etc.
There are so many good whole grain versions of food out there
now...even Lean Pockets.
