Meds Vs. Ketosis
Hello All -
I am new to this newsgroup, but have been lurking for about a week. My wife and I began Atkins induction for 5 days. We have been scrupulously following the program, keeping our carbs below 20 grams. We have been eating pretty much all of the same foods at most meals and have been taking al of the recommended vitamin supplements. I have lost about 7 pounds so far and I find myself well into ketosis with a nice dark moderate reading on the ketostick. My wife, however, has hardly shown a trace and this morning showed not even a trace reading. She has also shown only 2 pounds of weight loss so far. She is taking several medications which she thinks may be interfering with her induction. The meds she takes a Armour Thyroid, 150 Mg, first thing in the morning Zoloft, 100Mg, after a measl three hours after the thyroid Lipitor, 10Mg, at night before bed Does anyone here know whether any of these meds will stop ketosis induction? TIA, Tom |

Meds Vs. Ketosis
From what I've been told on this NG, ketosis is not the end-all indicator
for weight loss; it's just another factor used to determine if fat is being burned by measuring the presence of ketones in the urine. Don't forget that many factors can throw that amount off such as if your wife is consuming more water than you. It may very well be that your loss is mostly water whereas she's staying more hydrated. -- Cheers, Tom 220/206/190 "Bodhi" wrote in message rthlink.net... TIA, Tom Hi Tom, Your wife seems to be losing weight (even if it's less that yourself), so something *is* working. I would not weigh during induction since weight can fluctuate so greatly during this time. Weigh/measure once in the beginning and then again after 14 days. You can then compare losses to this chart to figure out the degree of metabolic resistance: http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/15-475820.html Men (in general) lose more easily than women simply because they have more muscle mass as well as hormonal differences. Here's a link to the atkins site about medications that can affect loss (Zoloft is mentioned): http://atkins.com/Archive/2003/2/2-190697.html The above article also mentions thyroid function, but I found another one that's a bit more indepth: http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/21-425982.html I can't stress enough (as mentioned in first the article) how important it is that she speak with her doctor about her medications before deciding to make any changes. Best of luck to both of you! ~miette |

She really should ask her doctor. I think it's ill-advised to ask this sort of thing on a newsgroup - and accept answers here as gospel. Usually, it's recommended that you speak with your doctor before embarking on a diet, or before a big diet change/upheaval. A change in diet can affect absorption of drugs which could wreak havoc on a system. Please...do yourselves a favor. Ask your doctor. Lee TIA, Tom |
