Fifth weigh-in
1st June: 130kg (287 lbs)
23rd June: 117kg (258 lbs) 9th July: 112kg (247 lbs) 23rd July: 107kg (236 lbs) 6th August: 104kg (229 lbs) 13th August 102kg (225 lbs) I'm running more than a mile most mornings now, but failing when I get to an uphill stint. Tomorrow, I'm going to try a new route that should allow me to go much further without encountering a hill, so that should help my confidence I hope. The sister-in-law has been quite critical of my weight loss and making out that it's all down to luck and I've put no effort in. She's never been fat in her life, but is struggling to lose a couple of lbs so I really won't take her comments to heart (besides, she's going through a horrible time at the moment so I'll be extra-forgiving). I'm also starting badminton this week and, energy permitting, going to try weights at the gym. I've lost most of my excess weight (well, 70% or so) and it's quite apparent, but I really need to make extra effort to lose the moobs. I've never had strong arms, but I went swimming at the weekend and put in 30 minutes of breast stroke (I normally just do the crawl and propel myself 95% with my strong legs) and used my legs as little as possible and put max effort into arm work. All my other exercise is cardio/legs only (running + bike) so any tips would be appreciated. I'm a long way off being able to manage a single push-up yet |

Congratulations! You are doing an excellent job (60+ pounds in 2 1/2
monthes is an amazing weight loss!) Is exercise your primary means of losing weight? I appreciate your post as it has given me the inspiration to really throw myself into my fitness routine (I went yesterday for the first time in about 7 monthes and it was tough!*l*) Ade wrote: 1st June: 130kg (287 lbs) 23rd June: 117kg (258 lbs) 9th July: 112kg (247 lbs) 23rd July: 107kg (236 lbs) 6th August: 104kg (229 lbs) 13th August 102kg (225 lbs) |

I think you'll feel even more confident if you attack and conquer it. I recently started doing more road cycling and have had to attack those hills I've always avoided. I may not be the fastest one up the hill but I don't have to stop and walk anymore and I see improvement each time. Beverly 177/142/~140 since 1996 |

I appreciate your post as it has given me the inspiration to really throw myself into my fitness routine (I went yesterday for the first time in about 7 monthes and it was tough!*l*) Thanks. I'm (not religiously) following the "warrior diet", although by coincidence rather than a deliberate action. Basically, I do all my eating on one go in the evening. I was calorie counting for the first 6 or 7 weeks, now I don't (I still estimate but I'm not fanatical - I've got the hang of it IYSWIM) and I'm still losing weight at the same weight. I try to exercise as much as I eat for maybe half the week. I have the odd day without a calorific deficit (when considering basal metabolic rate) but I rarely hit more than 2000 calories exercise, but 1000 isn't unusual and less than 300 is rare. Also, most of my exercise is sustained high intensity (eg exercise bike on highest setting for 30-60 minutes - my partner can't even turn the peddles on this setting) But I can certainly say, I feel hugely better on days when I've had a run - I feel lighter, fitter and more confident. If, after your exercise, you know you could have done a bit more, then do more the next time - that's my philosophy. Best of luck |

You're absolutely right, but I need to *know* I can beat it, so today I went on a longer run (2.3 miles - almost double my best and more than double my normal morning jog) and I hope to crack 3 miles this week. Once I've done that, I'll know that half a mile of hill after a 1 mile run will be "easy" I recently started doing more road cycling and have had to attack those hills I've always avoided. I may not be the fastest one up the hill but I don't have to stop and walk anymore and I see improvement each time. That's great. I have to say, even though I went maybe 10 years between the last time I cycled and my new exercise routine, I've never had a problem with tackling pretty much anything on a bike. I guess my problems are largely psychological - I used to bike everywhere when I was a teenager - 100+ hilly miles in a day was common. So I've never feared getting on a bike and just going for it. However, this really is the first time I've ever tried running (I used to largely avoid it at school, even) so my confidence isn't there yet. I'm toying with the idea of setting a difficult goal - maybe entering a half marathon next year. Beverly 177/142/~140 since 1996 Losing the weight, well, it's not been /effortless/ - far from it, but it's in some respects it's been quite easy for me. I hope I can do as well as you as far as maintaining a healthy size goes. |

Sorry to break it to you. :-) I've never had strong arms, but I went swimming at the weekend and put in 30 minutes of breast stroke (I normally just do the crawl and propel myself 95% with my strong legs) and used my legs as little as possible and put max effort into arm work. Anything that builds muscle is good - you may have been losing muscle in the upper body since you haven't been putting in any work up there. Have you had any problems with loose skin yet? Keep up the great work, Ade! Do not flag nor fail. You will go on to the end. You will fight you fat in the seas and oceans; you will fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the badmitton court. You will defend your progress whatever the cost may be; you will fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and on the hills. You will never surrender... This is your finest hour. I do watch my eating but that just becomes second nature after all these years. The biking allows me to indulge in those extras from time to time. I would like to drop back down around 135 but will concentrate on that this winter. It's tough to try to lose weight and increase climbing ability at the same time - for me at least! Beverly |

Well, I intended to aim for a 3 mile flat run today, but a thunder storm 5 minutes in changed my mind, so I just did the 1 mile + hill. And do you know what? EASY. Thanks for the encouragement.
