Default Importance of vitamin supplements...

Okay, so I got sloppy for awhile about taking my vitamin supplements. I
know better.

With low carbing, one of the things you can really come up short on is
vitamin C. Being strict and not eating fruit at all, and only eating a
minimal amount of fresh veggies, it's one item you really need!

I was getting sore and bleeding gums when I brushed my teeth every day
there for a short period. Started taking 1,000 mg. of vitamin C every
day and the problem has gone away. Gum problems are one of the first
symptoms to appear for vitamin C deficiency. aka, "scurvy".

Anyone else? ;-)

Cheers!

Haha. Wait, I'm not laughing at you. I'm laughing because lots of
times in the past, when JC has said people can just eat meat and nothing
else and be fine, I've frequently said "But what about scurvy!" and he's
pretty much acted like it's not a risk, but see? People still get
scurvy, and not just pirates. I'm glad you fixed yours, Om.

Now we all know that JC is incorrect. ;-)

At least I recognized what was going on. G
I was surprised too that I was able to reverse it that quickly.
Only took about 2 weeks.

Cheers!

Fresh beef has plenty of vitamins in it.

I've never gotten scurvy.

There is plenty of vitamin C available in animals if you eat the
entire animal. It's just that there is very little in =muscle=
tissue, and that's what "civilized" societies tend to eat greatly to
the exclusion of organ tissue (liver, kidneys and so on).

So if you want to live exclusively on steaks, roasts, hamburger and
such, yes, you will develop scurvy. But if you eat essentially all of
the edible parts of the kill you'll be fine.

I've got a refrigerator shelf full of low carb vegetables - cucumber,
broccolli, bell pepper, mushrooms, etc. I've got a huge number of tomatoes
ripening in my garden. You can eat well on low carb.

Strawberries/bluberries/cantaloup(rockmelon) are fairly low carb fruits you
can have in moderation too.

This isn't really a result of low carbing, but rather injudicious

I think that was my point. ;-)

I'm not a real fan of peppers or cabbage...
It's easy to swallow a pill.

This is just something that folks have to be _aware_ of as fruit is off
of most low carbers routine food lists.

I have to stay below 20 grams per day of carbs to stay in even a light
ketosis. I have a VERY low carb tolerance.

Unfortunately.

You have full dentures.
Your vote does not count. ;-)

And beef is not a good source for vitamin C!!!

I eat piles of veggies, including lots of cabbage, and small amounts of
lower-carb fruits so doubt I'm in danger of scurvy.

Nevertheless, I make what I call "homemade gatorade" or sometimes
"low-carb juice." Basically, I mix up two quarts of Crystal Light with
the addition of 1/2 tsp Morton's Lite Salt and 1 tsp powdered calcium
ascorbate from Bronson.

It's a small enough amount of salt to not taste salty and the ascorbate
just makes it a bit tangy (the calcium form is non-acidic). I always
have a pitcher of this in the fridge next to the filtered water.

It gets in your potassium, a hefty dose of vitamin C and some calcium
all in one go. I do take other supplements - this mix just makes for
fewer pills to swallow.
