Default how about truffle oil?

Has anyone ever cooked with it? WHere would you use it? I'm interested in
trying new flavors and recipes, but not sure if truffle oil is worth the
investment...

Have you had truffles before? Why don't you start with checking out
the different olive oils and see what you like first? Unless you pay a
lot of money for a very small bottle of truffle oil, you're not
getting the real stuff anyway. I happy to love truffles, but if you've
never tasted them before, wait until you do. They are an acquired
taste.

Or, maybe you can find a gourmet shop who will give you a taste of
some they have. Doesn't hurt to ask an upscale market what they think.

I believe truffle oil is meant to be drizzled - in *very small
quantities* - on or in food. Like, for example, you would spoon a tiny
amount over a rich soup. Or you would use it sparingly in a mushroom
sauce served with, say, pork tenderloin.

You certainly wouldn't use it the same way you use other oils, like to
fry stuff.

Well, the problem is they start with See's candy truffles -for quality oil.
I think you should just skip the oil and have the truffles directly.

Well, I hate See's truffles. If the base was say, Moonstruck or Godiva,
then I could see making the investment.

STOP!!!

That is NOT what truffle oil is. LOL!!!

Truffle oil is made from the fungi, aka as "truffle". There are white
truffles and black truffles.

The candy is named after the fungi because it resembles a truffle.

The oil has a distinct taste that is used delicately and drizzled
lightly over prepared foods.

Reminds me of a dinner years ago on a business trip with a young woman
who was just out of college. We were at an Italian restaurant and I
ordered fettucine with truffles. She was appalled at the idea of such
a dish and said it sounded like an awful combination. We talked at
cross purposes for a couple of minutes until I realized she thought
the dish was pasta with chocolate truffles!
