I was listening to a talk show this morning ( Dr Hoffman) and he was talking about the effects of high fructose corn syrups since their introduction in the 1970's and the obesity trend. On carb-up days, I eat about 700-900 grams of carbs, and I have to be very careful about what type of carbs they are, limiting fructose intake to a specific amount at a specific part of the cycle. Fructose has to go through the liver before anything else can use it, so it's a prime candidate for conversion to other things (like fats) and repletes liver glycogen preferrably (i.e. it affects ketosis and other hormones faster). |

I always reached for a diet soda, because a regular soda never quenched my
thirst. Man, the evil fruit juice isle at the grocery store. The Capri Suns I put in my kids lunch every day, the Snapples I drank to feel healthy. It is in everything, even spagetti sauce & Spagetti-o's! The whole middle of the grocery store for that matter. They don't know what to do with all that corn- make fuel out of it, not bad food. Richard A. Anderson, a heavy duty nutritional researcher at USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center was quoted in the AARP magazine this month stating that the liver processes HFCS differently than glucose so that it goes directly into fat storage rather than into blood glucose that can be burned. He states unequivocally that HFCS has a large part to play in the obesity epidemic. (He's the guy behind the Cinnamon research in Pakistan, too, BTW). I'm not making excuses for anyone. I've kept my weight under control almost all of my life despite having some kind of genetic diabetes. But I have read widely enough in nutrition/obesity research to be convinced that there are mechanisms built into normal animals eating normal foods that prevent obesity unless genetic damage or something else, in this case engineered foods providing huge amounts of chemicals that in nature are rare which preferentially metabolize into fats.
