Bowling injury and eating less
Well, I'm happy to report that it looks like my binge eating was probably
just a phase related to quitting smoking, and not a pathological thing I need to go to therapy for. Yay! The past few days I've been keeping busy doing things other than mindless nibbling and I don't feel nearly as gross and out of control as I did earlier this week. I hope the feeling sticks, and even if it doesn't I can make sure the behavior does. One of the things I did lately was that I went bowling for the first time in a long time. And, well, I hurt myself. I thought working out made me stronger and I wouldn't get hurt, but apparently bowling uses muscles that don't get used much in the rest of my life. For those of you who are familiar with bowling, I try to get down as low as possible for my release, with my left leg in front and my right crossed behind me. But I slipped at just the wrong moment and my left leg kind of jutted out to the right, and I twisted my ankle, and I felt pretty much like I wrenched my whole body. My left butt cheek hurts, and there's a sort of ring of pain all the way around the very top of my thigh, and my right shoulder, shoulder blade, and side of my neck are pretty sore too. Thankfully my ankle feels just a little sore, but it's ok. Anyway, I skipped doing the weight machines today because I was still so sore, but now I wonder if maybe I should have done them anyway, that maybe it would help? How do you know what kind of pain will be helped by working out and what kind will get worse? -- Michelle Levin http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick I have only 3 flaws. My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws. |

Any of my bowling "injuries" usually occurred the next morning and went away with a Tylenol and a couple cups of coffe. I am going to assume what you have are bruises and a mild strain. So light exercise should be fine. Get the limbs moving, but don't put a lot of stress on it, also don't fall out of the habit of working out. Test with very light weights and if something feels wrong (moving around when it shouldn't, putting extra stress on joints), I would stop. I like to alternate ice and heat afterwards to any areas of swelling. Unset broken bones are a real worry and those should be pretty obvious. |

Any of my bowling "injuries" usually occurred the next morning and went away with a Tylenol and a couple cups of coffe. Yeah, me too. I'm used to being a little bit sore when I come back to it after being out of practice. I am going to assume what you have are bruises and a mild strain. So light exercise should be fine. I was a little bit active yesterday even though I didn't go to the gym. Up and down two flights of stairs 10 times or so, and playing tag with the kids at work. It actually feels a lot better today, so I'll be back at the gym tomorrow. I was particularly worried about hurting myself more because load-in for DragonCon starts Thursday, and the con runs through Monday, so that's 5 straight days of being on my feet. -- Michelle Levin http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick I have only 3 flaws.
