I need some help...
Hi..I hope you people can help me out. I am someone who is very
overweight (I would love to loose 100 lbs, but I would settle for losing half of that) and I have finally decided to do somethng about it. I know that the 2 things that I have to are diet and exercise. Diet I have taken care of. I have talked to the nutritionist at my Dr.s office to get me going on that side. It's the exercise that I need your help with. Since I am not able to join a local gym here for a couple of reasons (1-It's really expensive - way out of what I can afford and 2-even if I could afford it, the hours are not conducive to me. I am gone from home almost 14 hours a day - leave the house before 6 AM and don't get home until after 7PM, and in the time I have in the early evening, I need to spend some time with my 9 year old daughter before she goes to bed), so I am looking for an exercise tape that I can follow along with. I am looking for one that would not really be too difficult for someone who is almost 50 and has not really exercised seriously since high school (and not really all that seriously back then). I need something that would not really be too tough to start with because I just know if it is too much, I'll just give up on it. Once I get into the habit of exercise, I plan on going harder, but I need something to start off with. Do any of you have any suggestions as to any tapes that might fit this descriptions? THank You |

Chuckle. How strong is the spring that pushes back the clutch pedal. Once I had a car where the spring was so strong I'd get a tired leg if I drove more than 3 hours. Twenty-five years later when I'm looking for a new car I still drive past the dealers with that brand. The problem, you see, wasn't the exercise involved. It was how asymmetrical the exercise was. Put a huge spring on the gas pedal, that would balance it out! ;^) Back to reality I've read mention of aerobic breathing. One of those infomercials across the years made claims about it but I've long since forgotten which one. Aerobic breathing sounds like either it's nonsense or something that could be done in a car to some benefit. Controlled breathing being a part of yoga, I won't automatically jump to the nonsense side of that dichotomy. |

I'd change that sentence to read you *get to* spend time with your daughter. You might even consider doing something active with her that could help you reach your diet goals. If you don't like the walking suggestion, you might try a tai chi video. Matthew |

I leave the house to catch my train at 5:45 or there abouts. After a 20 minute ride to the train station, I get on the train. It gets me into downtown Chicago at about 7:30. A half hour bus trip from the train station to work. Work is 8.5 hours (1/5 for lunch). A bus ride back to the train station, the train ride back and the car ride from the train and its around 7:15/7:30. I hate my commute, but Thats where the job is, so thats where I go. |

I love my clutch and gearshifter. Sorry! Chuckle. How strong is the spring that pushes back the clutch pedal. I can't begin to guess but all the stop and go around town, there's alot of fancy footwork happening. I also use downshifting (engine compression) more than the brakes. In 8 years I've only had to replace one brakepad! VBG My '98 GTI/VR6. As much fun to drive today as the day I bought it new in May, 1998. Funny thing, people second glance as I drive since I have such long legs, I shove the seat all the way back and tilt the seat back a bit so it looks like I'm driving from the back seat. Back to reality I've read mention of aerobic breathing. One of those infomercials across the years made claims about it but I've long since forgotten which one. Meditation (when I was into it and reached Zen and gave it up) there was a three part breathing technique. More to get into a steady rhythm and calm the system down some, not much for the exercise, though it probably burned a calorie or two. I think it was 4 heartbeats inhale to the chesk, then 4 heartbeats down to the belly and 4 heartbeats exhale. I forget exactly. Andy |

THank You I don't know about tapes, but can you fit in some Isometric exercises at work or on the commute. Not as good as a "real" workout but at least it's something! Just push against the wall, roof of the car, your other hand, etc, enough to feel the muscles tense and hold that position for 8 - 10 secs before releasing. If you are riding in a car during a long commute you can clench different muscle groups and hold for as long as possible. Do as many reps as you can. This doesn't help with range of motion but it would be better than just 'sitting'! I agree, spending time with your daughter is very important, but think of how much more quality time you can spend if you are able to move about more easily and have some endurance! Also she will appreciate the additional years she will have with you because you took time to take care of yourself! Fran |

THank You Congratulations on starting your diet and exercise program. As others have mentioned walking is always a great way to get into exercise. When I first started I had some Richard Simmons "Sweatin' to the Oldies" exercise tapes that I really enjoyed. The exercises weren't too tough but really got you moving. My kids loved joining me when I used them. Maybe your daughter would enjoy joining you. I'm sure you could find some on Amazon. Beverly |
