Default LC Chocolate??

Hi....new LCer here....and I'm craving something sweet in the afternoons.
I've read some posts about lo-carb chocolates, could someone tell me which
kinds? I looked up the Hershey's no sugar added and they use a substitute
instead of sugar...does that make it lo carb?

Thanks!

Yes. According to the Atkins plan, Sugar Alcohols can be dismissed as not
affecting blood sugar. However, YMMV!

Then, many people have adverse reactions to the sugar alcohols; gas,
bloating, and/or diarrhea. Again, YMMV! If you haven't tried candy/food
with SA's, start small and see how you react.

The Atkins Endulge bar(s) seem to have less than some others (check labels).
For myself, I could eat one a day, no problem. The "Carb-lite" (I think)
jelly beans on the other hand, a few bytes and I'm running down the hall to
the euphemism. :-)

There are also recipes for making your own Sugar and SA-free chocolates
using Splenda... See another thread labeled, "Lynne's Chocolate"...

Default LC Chocolate??

I've found various brands at my local drugstore... Evasion is one, Ross
Chocolates are another. And then there's Russell Stover chocolates.

Check the label for the type of sweetener they use, though. Sugar
alcohols (maltitol and others) give some people the runs. Other people
can tolerate them well.

I have also made my own concoctions using unsweetened Baker's Chocolate
and adding some butter, heavy cream, cocoa powder and Splenda. Very
yummy. I like my chocolate very tart.

I also like the Lindt high cocoa content chocolates that contain some
sugar. Although, just today I discovered Lindt 99% cocoa which even
comes with a warning on the inside package. 99% cocoa doesn't leave
much room for sugar, although brown sugar is the last item on the
ingredients list (Chocolate, Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Butter, Brown Sugar....
that's all.)

Maybe, next time, I'll try making my Baker's chocolate totally unsweetened.

I also found some other un-sugared candies at the drug store, including
gummi bears.

Hope that helps.

A review of the Lindt 99%???? Here goes.

Very bitter? The warning on the package suggests you slowly go from 70%
choc to 85% choc and then finally to 99%. I recently had some 85% that
tasted sweet to me, so I though I was ready for this. I was ready for
it, but it still takes some getting used to. It's got a very nice bite
to it, that you just don't get in the sugared chocolates, which are
starting to taste a bit bland to me.

I also just tried a piece of Baker's unsweetened chocolate and it tasted
just as bitter, but not as smooth. For about a-quarter the price,
though, I think I'll stick to baker's and leave Lindt for special
occasions.

Lindt was $2.99CDN for 50g (half the size of regular Lindt 100g bars)

I hope that helps a bit. It's so hard to describe the taste of food,
especially chocolate.

LOL.. Atkins is great chocolate bars.. jelly beans however are a problem for
me too.. I think it might be because they have to use so much more of the
nasty stuff in them. I made the mistake of eating exactly one serving of
some Russel Stovers today.. god they were good but I have been paying for
them all evening. I think I put my lactose intolerant baby grandson to
shame, lol. (thank goodness poor baby is on soy formula now.. granny won the
contest today for sure, lol) I can eat one of the choclate bars though and
it doesn't affect me one bit. But no more of those jellybeans.

I also have some of the 85% Lindt chocolate. Per the label... 8 carb grams
per serving. A serving is 40 grams. 3 of those 8 carb grams are dietary
fiber, so 5 net. Not too bad if you're looking for LC chocolate. I think
that is a far better solution than the sugar alcohol sweetened chocolates.
Little to no risk of either digestive distress or your body using the sugar
alcohol as fuel and blowing your LC diet. Might even be cheaper than some of
the LC products, and it's a far superior item. Haven't seen the 99% bars;
would like to try some.

I bought some 100 gram bars Saturday Oct 18 at Cost Plus World Market for
USD $1.83. They had 20% off all Lindt products. Not sure if it's still on
sale. Regular price was USD $2.29. I live in SW Ohio, but I think these
stores are all across the USA.

Regards,

Joe

Default LC Chocolate??

I have tried many or most of the low-carb chocolate bars out there,
and the best one by far, to my taste, is Ross Chocolates Dark Delight
(assuming you like dark chocolate).

Here's why I think it's the best:

- It tastes better than any of the others: they use real high quality
Belgian chocolate.
- They don't use any artificial sweeteners like Sucralose (which
Atkins uses and which has had bad effects on kidneys of rats which
were tested with it).
- There is only 1gm of carbs per bar.
- There is less maltitol in this bar than any other I've seen, which
means a much lower chance of stomach upset (I can even eat two without
getting a stomach upset!).
- It's the only low-carb bar I've seen in which the chocolate is the
FIRST ingredient and the sweetener the second. This is real chocolate.

The lowest price I've found on it so far (please let me know if you
know of a place to get it cheaper) is at lowcarbfooddepot.com. They're
in Canada and seem to get very fresh shipments of it, and the cost of
shipping to the USA is reasonable:
http://www.lowcarbfooddepot.com/gc/g...55267101462871

Anyway, that's my two cents.

2nd best low-carb chocolate? Teuscher makes a bar for $5.00 each
that's 99% chocolate, sweetened with saccarin. It's an interesting
change of pace, but for normal every day (and I do mean every day)
use, I stick with Ross (which I buy by the case!). The Teuscher I
think is only available at their shops.
