Default Response from Support at ANI discrepancy in allowable foods in induction

A couple of weeks ago we had a discussion about allowable foods and the fact
that a new
booklet produced by Atkins Nutritional directly contradicted the dietary
instructions in DANDR.

As you read down, you'll see my editorial note- it appears that induction
*IS* being restructured
to include the use of their products, increasing their market share.

Thank you for your inquiry.

THE FOUR PHASES OF THE ATKINS' NUTRITIONAL APPROACH

The way you can tell what product is appropriate for which stage is to check
the color coded box next to each product.

The number of Net Carbs per serving generally determines the categories as
follows:

PHASE 1 INDUCTION
"Jump Start" Weight Loss
3g Net Carbs or fewer per serving.
ORANGE

Get into lipolysis and the secondary process of Ketosis, where you safely
burn stored fat for energy. Limit carbs to 20 grams per day. Eat enough
protein and healthy fats to feel satisfied, plus 3 cups of salad (or
substitute 1 cup with other non- starchy veggies) Drink 8 glasses of water.
After 14days, weight loss of 5-10 pounds is common. Do Induction for a
minimum of 2 weeks or continue for longer if you have a lot to lose.
------------------------------------------------------

PHASE 2 ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS (OWL)
Find your "CCLL"
3-9g Net Carbs or fewer per serving.
(BLUE)

Liberalize your daily carb consumption by 5-gram increments each week. Go
from 20g to 25g daily for the first week and then to 30g and so forth until
you find your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing (CCLL). Do so by
increasing carb intake until your weight loss slows to 1 to 2 pounds a week.
Then continue until you are within 5- 10 pounds of your goal weight. Added
carbs should come in the form of nutrient-dense and fiber-rich foods.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

PHASE 3 PRE MAINTENANCE
Find Your "CCLM"
10g Net Carbs or less per serving
(RED)
As you approach your goal weight, increase your carb consumption to slow
your rate of loss to 1 to 2 pounds a month. Each week add 10 grams more of
carbs a day until you stop losing, Or have a 20 to 30 gram carb treat, such
as a piece of fruit or a cup of whole grains, twice a week. Either way if
you stop losing, cut back. When you reach and maintain your goal weight for
a month, you will have established your Critical Carbohydrate Level for
Maintenance (CCLM).

------------------------------------------------------

PHASE 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE
Learn Lifetime Habits
10g Net Carbs or more per serving
(PURPLE)
Congratulations!

Now that you have achieved your goal wight, you can enjoy a variety of
foods so long as you continue to control your intake of carbs. Just stay
within your CCLM, And if you gain back 3-5 pounds, simply cut back on your
carbs again until you take off the extra weight, by never letting your
weight increase more than 5 pounds -before you take it off- a lifetime of
slimness is your reward.

------------------------------------------------------

****NOTE THIS PART!!!!!!! ( it flies in the face of what is written in the
book)

There are certain exceptions to these categories:

* Although Net Carb count is key, it is also important to eat foods high in
nutrients and rich in fiber during all phases of Atkins, So when portion
control is strictly followed and they are limited to one servings per day,
certain foods that are slightly higher in Net Carbs are allowed on
Induction. These included Atkins Bake Mix, Atkins Pancake and Waffle Mix,
Atkins Quick and Easy Muffin and Bread Mix, Atkins Sliced Bread and
Thickenthin Not Cereal.

It is prudent to avoid certain desserts during the first two weeks of
Induction when cravings for sweets may not yet be under control. So for
example, although many Atkins Endulge products contain 2g Net Carbs or fewer
serving, they are not coded for Induction. After the first two weeks those
who opt to remain on Induction can try introducing these products in
moderation.

Subject: Consumer Other: "All About Atkins" Booklet

I recently picked up a copy of
this booklet at my local health
food store. I was reviewing it's
contents and found that the "week on induction" diet enclosed differed
drastically from the sample diet on this website, and
in fact included some foods that
are NOT allowed according to the
food lists in Dr Atkins New Diet
Revolution. Can someone clarify
the use of breads, tortillas, muffins and diet shakes during
induction for me??

Thanks,
Sally C. Spear

Da noive! I'm glad my baking skills allow me to concoct recipes using
LC components. The total carb counts are much lower than Atkins'
products, the flavor is much better, the cost is definitely more
economical, but better still, I don't support a company who has, it
seems, lost sight of its founder's goal for the dollar signs in their
eyes.

Nah, I read that as their trying to make it easier for stupid people. I
overheard a woman in the store saying "all this is so confusing! I read

the
book and couldn't understand it!"
