I totally agree Bev,

I bet the thousands of folks who read his book and watch his show agree
too.

was very down on Dr. Phil but decided to check his "7 key to weight loss"
book out of the library. I was shocked at how really sensible it is. If

you
can get a copy of the book from the library or if you have the money to
spare, I'd recommend that you read it. Dr. Phil talks about getting to a
weight that you can maintain and is healthy for you. It may not be the
weight at which you have only 10% body fat. So his idea weight is higher
than you think it should be. You don't have to live in Dr. Phil's body,

he
does. I don't think that makes him a hypocrite. I still find it sort of
troubling to see the multitude of Dr. Phil branded diet stuff filling up

the
"health" food section of the grocery store. I haven't really looked at

the
ingredients to see if it's better than Atkins branded stuff or the

slimcrap
stuff. I don't begrudge the guy his ability to make money, though.

I think his book makes a lot of sense. Don't knock it if you haven't read

it.
I think his program is helping a lot of people, myself included. Beverly B

Hi Melissa,

I agree with you 100%. I think some folks just hate hearing the truth.
They hate to think that what they hear might be something they are included
in. We all have to step up to the plate and face the real reasons we're
overweight. We need to make real lifestyle changes to change the behaviors
we programmed ourselves to follow, and make new healthier behaviors that
will let us live longer healthier lives.

I've seen him mentioned at 6' 4" and 240 pounds. He admits to fighting

his
weight problem and also mentions he has many obese people in his family.

He
is a large guy, just look at the size of his hands or his head. While he

may
have some weight he could do without, he is very active from all accounts.

I
also think he looks taller than 6' 4".

I think it's easier to listen to someone who does struggle like the rest

of
us than someone who is rail thin and has never fought their weight. He is
much more "real" in that sense.

He is probably healthier, even with that extra 20 pounds than many people
who are skinny but never exercise or eat junk food all the time.

I applaud you for your effort.

Dr. Phil...have you noticed he's about 60 pounds over weight? I'd pick
another person to follow. Have you seen Dr. Bruner that has been on his
show? She doesn't subscribe to his program, she's on the medical

advisory
board of another another group of Doctors.

Good luck,

I am looking for a diet buddy. Ideally you should be like me, female,

over
100lbs to lose, no kids.

I have just purchased Dr Phils book and would like someone to chat to

anyone
who is following his 7 steps. I'm in the UK.

Hello xxxx,

I replied to the email you sent me. Of course I'm male, had more than

100
pounds to lose, and I have kids. I don't know why that should matter

It didn't matter for me, but a lot of my exuse making friends use their
children as excuses for why they can't lose weight. Gotta have snacks for
them, and all.

A) they're making excuses and they're not ready for a diet yet
B) teaching kids "proper snacking" now perhaps will stay with them for the
rest of their lives

Anyway...

Here are Dr. Phils seven PERSONAL keys to harping on weight loss;

Money
Money
Money
Money
Money
Money
Ego

yeah.

The guy creeps me out. He tries to package pop psychology in hillbilly
homilies.What is he thinking?

Well, Dr. Phil's brand of psychology is not "pop". It is a legitimate form
of psychotherapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and has been around
since the 60s, "invented" by a guy named Aaron Beck
http://www.beckinstitute.org

Originally shuned by traditionalist therapists, it is starting to be common
now, and studies have shown that people who have been treated in that manner
for depression are less likely to have a relapse than those who use
anti-depressants for treatment.

The problem is, Dr. Phil is renaming all the techniques, and marketing it as
his own.

Some may say, if it works, why care what it's called...but...

You need to step away from the plate and you won't need to look for
reasons.

I don't care for a lot of Dr. Phil's schtick on his show because sometimes
he comes off as the male version of Dr. Laura. That said, I gave his book a
fair read and found his advice sensible and pretty much the same things we
learned in HMR and in other diet plans. He may use hilbilliy homilies (I
love that term!), but at least he'll reach some hillbillies that can't be
reached any other way.

T - you also hit the nail on the head about his advocating finding a
healthy, maintainable weight. Too many people fail on diets because they
have unrealistic expectations. I think that may be why some people fail to
maintain weight loss also, by trying to maintain a weight that may not be
right for them at the time. The average person needs to have things spelled
out for them in simple, relatable terms. His 7 steps are a lot harder to
misinterpret than the morons I see who think they're on Atkins because
they're eating cheeseburgers without the bun.

I happen to know Denise very well. She eats Caesar salads for lunch.

Paul, I couldn't agree with you more. The changes we make need to be long
term and maintainable no matter what program we ascribe to. My slights are
not directed to those follow Dr. P.
I wish them all the best.
