Default low carb frenzy

I have seen dozens of new products pop up just in the last couple of months
in my grocery store. Slim Fast now offers a lowcarb rtd, there's low carb
pasta, bread etc. Yesterday I found a lowcarb dairy beverage. I'm not
following a "low carb" diet persay, but decided to try it because it was
chocolate flavored... I really liked it - 100 cal per cup, and 12g of
protein. Tasted really good alone, and made a great protein shake. It's
made with splenda. I tried a new low carb bread this weekend, and found it
to be dry and not very tasty, but some of the others are really good. I
love low carb pasta now too. But, just because it says lowcarb doesn't mean
it's really healthy - Subway's new wraps are a good alternative to the
bread, but the 2 new menu additions that use the wraps are about 500
calories and 27g of fat.

I know what you mean - everyone is jumping on the low-carb bandwagon. All
restaurants now seem to advertise low-carb entrees.

You can get any sandwich at Subway on the new wrap. My daughter and I
stopped last week and ordered our usual turkey sub on the wrap.

Ruby Tuesday now has a rather large section of their menu devoted to
low-carb fare. We tried some of it last week and it was good. I loved
their Cajun chicken breast. They're also adding the option of ordering
your sandwich with a wrap rather than a bun. My daughter got her veggie
burger on the wrap.

I agree it's about time the restaurants and food industry starting offering
a larger selection but unfortunately some of the low-carb items being
offered aren't as healthy as they lead us to believe. We still need to
read the labels and decide for ourselves if it fits our woe whether it be
low-carb, low-fat, fat-free, etc. I've seen several low-carb items that
have just too many calories for me.

Exactly what I was getting at. It's great to have more options, but some
people will blindly eat anything marked "low carb" just like when "low fat"
was so popular. But personally I'm happier with having low carb options
than low fat. You still have to use common sense...

When Subway first got the wraps, I tried the new chicken bacon ranch wrap -
it was delicious. It also had like 500 calories and 27g of fat! Not really
what I'd call healthy.

Tortillas, both corn and flour, are a staple in this part of the world and
have been about the hardest thing for me to give up (except on very rare
occasions). I priced the new low carb versions and went into "sticker
shock". Over $4 for a package of 12 low burrito sized flour-type tortillas.
The regular sell for about $1.25. I won't pay that. I guess I'll just
continue to do without.

Just because it says "low carb" doesn't make it good for you.

Just as
just because it says "low fat" doesn't make it good for you.

absolutely right jj.

one thing you forget though.............................i'm old
enough to remember "dieting" of the 60's when we ate LOW CARB and
did just fine.

education is key here.
moderation is key here.
imo!

I'm surprised at this rosie. you of all people. you've gone

aroudn
for years tooting the "low fat myth" problems that developed from

low
fat fad. Now this low carb thing will only turn into the same
problem.

if there is no education accompanying this new and hopefully, final,
switch in our eating habits, the same problems will result, your
right.

if HOWEVER this generation of heavy folks give up "the dieting
attitude" and start eating for fuel, and moving for health, we will
get "over the hump"!
