Watching the news tonight and a report is out about the crime rate being up
on one of the local pedestrian trails. This is one of those once a train
track, converted to a long pedestrian path that goes thru the community.

This is such sad news. Main crimes tend to be indecent exposure and
robbery.

Just last week here in Portland a woman was raped robbed an beaten during
daylight hours by 2 15 yr old boys while on a jogging path. It IS a shame -
and scary. The perps are getting younger and more dangerous... I've
considered many times taking advantage of the many miles of jogging/biking
trails locally, but haven't for this reason.

crime will rise right along with the unemployment rate and the economy.
we can only pray that things change.

I was actually flashed a couple or so years ago at 7am during mid morning rush
hour as I was talking my morning walk...the guy did it right out on the street
in front of me...I just laughed and the cars were driving by honking their
horns...it was like America's Funniest Videos or something.

We've had problems with women being assaulted on the trails near my house and
I'm nearly in the country. I'm careful on my walks. No more in dark either am
or pm. Never over through the park by myself no matter what time of day.

I used to carry pepper spray but now I always take my cell phone. We had a girl
get lost a few months back out jogging with her bf..she was visiting from south
texas and decided to show off and ended up losing him and getting terribly
lost. She knocked on my door because we are right on the trail. Of course he
wasn't home because he was out looking for her. We got in my car and drove
around until we could find his house. When I got home I realized what a
complete IDIOT I had been...what if it had been a setup or something. But I
just didn't think of the realities.

They have cute little 22's that fit right in the center of most bras. Mace
is very good, too. If you make a mistake, it isn't permanent.

Before our serial killer was caught, you couldn't turn on the TV without
some sort of safety tip. This being a redneck state and all, the governor
actually had a commercial on TV advocating that women pack heat. The thing
with any weapon is to be ready to use it. That's where mace is probably
better. They suggested carrying it in the on position in your hand ready to
use. No good rapist or robber is going to wait for you to figure out the
safety device, take aim and spray. And running with guns scares other
joggers. Also, if robbery is the crime du jour, chances are they will not
be after athletes who carry very little with them.

Also, remember that it only takes 8 pounds of pressure to break someone's
foot. A good stomp will ensure you have an advantage when running away.

They had all kinds of seminars broadcast on one of the local access
stations. In them, they showed how to free yourself from a man's grip. It
is too complicated to write about but even without a serial killer around, I
think everyone should take these classes.

As far as indecent exposures.... too bad it's too cumbersome to carry a
digital camera while running. I bet that would make for some interesting
6:00 news coverage.

Without overreacting, a lot of it is just being aware of your surroundings.
Listen and look for all things around you. I do wear a Walkman when I walk,
but I don't turn it up loud and I am constantly looking all around me. I
live in the heart of the city, I know what it takes to prosper here. I also
know what makes a person a target; weakness, fear and stupidity.

Our problem around here isn't the bike/hike trails but the mall parking
lots. Our trails are patrolled by volunteers and the park rangers. I've
inquired about becoming a bike trail patrol volunteer next summer. It
sounds like a good way to do something I love and besides the uniforms are
coolg

I am highly doubtful of that...

I don't know how many pounds of pressure it would take but stomping on the
top of your attacker's foot is one of the many things they teach you in a
self-defense class.

Years ago when I was going to college I worked at a neighborhood bar in the
evenings. On my way home from work one night I was stopped for a train. I
noticed a car pull up behind me but didn't think too much about it until I
glanced up and saw this naked man standing beside my car. He tried to open
the door but I was able to back into his car and get away. All the time
this fellow was yanking on the door and yelling for me to open it. The
owners of the bar had me call the police next day to report the incident
since it happened close to work and they thought he might be someone who
came into the bar. When the police asked me if I got a good look at the
guy I said "Yes, but not his face". This policeman's face turned beet red
and all he could do was laugh. Needless to say they never found out who it
was and it never happened again. I can laugh about the incident now but at
the time it was very frightening.

I don't know how many pounds of pressure it would take but stomping on the
top of your attacker's foot is one of the many things they teach you in a
self-defense class.

If you look at an Xray or a graphic representation of the bones in the foot,
it is easy to see why. There are multiple bones that run the length of the
foot. According to this sight, http://www.fpnotebook.com/ORT63.htm, there
are 26 bones in a foot. Furthermore, although the natural tendency is to
knee or kick an attacker in the groin, it requires getting too close to them
and men are instinctively very protective of their testicles. It is far
easier to surprise a male attacker with a sound stomp on a foot.

And what if it takes a little more than 8 pounds as reported. With strong
thighs fueled by adrenaline, etc., it would be easy to generate 100 plus
pounds. I willing to experiment with any volunteers. Just put out your
foot and I will stomp on it with pressure of incremental increases in
pressure until the bones break
