What if I'm against the choices women make that lead to them being in a
position to want to have an abortion, but I'm also against the consequences
of making it illegal (i.e. back alley abortions)?

That is the silliest argument. I would rather not be born than to be born,
helpless, to a person that didn't want me and couldn't take care of me.
Have you ever seen what happens to the kids born to these people? Have you,
as I have, ever had a drunken, high, pregnant student removed from your
classroom for unruly condect, etc. I often have wondered what happened to
that baby -- but I am sure I know. I have to say, I am THRILLED my mom, for
part of her life at least, has had the RIGHT to have an abortion. I am
thrilled I have that legal right, too. However, if this makes you join
Curves, fine for you.

I think I'd join Curves even if I didn't plan on using my memership
if I knew it was "prolife."

P.S. But you're certainly entitled to boycott it, just like I'm
entitled to boycott PP. Just not sure why it is so "awful" that they
are anti-abortion...about half of America is.

My guess is, this forum would be split about half/half on the issue,
and the results would differ mostly
probably depending on how the person worded the question...

Dear Nimue,

This nature of this kind of post alienates and divides. Your intent
may be to be helpful. If the reader disagrees, it is viewed as
offensive. Please try to see it from another point of view.

I love this newsgroup because the posters generally try to be helpful,
supportive, and on-topic most of the time. There are posters here who
have views diametrically opposed to my own, politically,
religiously.....I appreciate their on-topic contributions AND I
actually like them, or their online pesona, at any rate. I don't know
if they would feel the same about me if I were to post my
political/religious views, and since this is a diet support newsgroup,
I try not to do that.

Well, I thought I was on-topic, surely. I didn't just post "Pro-Choice --
YAY!" I thought this was something everyone would want to know. I have to
say, I like the way you worded your reply. Very gracious.

True.. but considering several here do use Curves for workouts, (and
that particular topic can be VERY volatile in nature given the
extremes from one side to the other in beliefs,) I was glad to see
it. I had considered Curves, as there is one not a mile from here.. I
will not even bother at this point given that information. However it
should have been labeled at least slightly off topic and should not
have been posted from a group given to hearsay.. I think the link to
the article should have been enough, leaving out the mention of the
gossip group. That in itself is enough to turn most people off from
what could be good information.

Actually, I mentioned the gossip group to give them credit -- HAH! I really
did. I didn't think people were so prejudiced against it (especially the
people who have never been to that ng, I imagine). I have to say, I am
pleased that you aren't going to Curves, now. Do exercise somewhere,
though, and good luck getting slender!

It's
something we, as possible consumers of Curves, should know. I am AMAZED at
the anger this has generated. I had no idea people would respond by
plonking me or getting angry. I thought people had a right to know -- I
guess some people just don't want to know, and killfile the messenger, so to
speak.

Anybody who knows anything about Gary or Curves (just read his book) won't be a
bit surprised by this. He has never been quiet about his conservative Christian
views. He has a right to his own opinion, as do the rest of us. shrug

This is exactly why abortion is a good thing. Why should a child (plus
the people this child will affect in life) pay for what the parents did
wrong (regarding contraceptions or when they fail).

Default Curves - Bad News

On Sun, 25 Apr 2004 04:50:02 GMT, "nimue"
announced in front of God and everybody:

-- Just so you know: Gary Heavin, the founder of the Waco, Texas-based
chain of exercise studios called Curves, is a heavy contributor to
several organizations allied with Operation Save America, the rather
more muscular successor to Operation Rescue, the anti-choice group.

I heard about this last night from a friend, and looked into it this
morning.

Damn it.

I like Curves. I enjoy going to Curves. But considering the amount of
time I spent in the 80's licking envelopes, writing letters, walking
in marches and working the front lines helping to escort women into
health care clinics so they could get their check-ups, pap smears and,
yes, legal abortions without being physically assaulted by the
so-called "Christians" of Operation Rescue ... I just can't justify
giving them my money if even a small portion is going to those
hateful, violent nutjobs.

I repeat -- damn it.
