Too Few Calories?

I've been on about a 800-1000 calorie diet for the past 7 months. I've lost 60 pounds in doing so. I'm a bit scaired though because I've just started reading articles about weight loss and I'm reading stuff like 1000 calories are too few, etc. and I'm actually seeing recommendations of things like 2000 calories. Yeah, I'd started dieting back in January and had lost 20 pounds by Arpil! By then, I'd read that my 1500-2000 daily caloric intake was actually too low, and, unfortunately, I let that be an excuse to eat more...and by summer's end I gained back all the weight I'd lost! (Though ten pounds were apparently water weight due to creatine intake, which I've stopped recently since running out of the stuff.) What I've found is that when I eat even 1500 calories in a given day, I don't lose weight, but when I eat around 1000, I do. I've found that I lose weight by starving myself like that, but unfortunately I also lose a LOT of strength. I don't mean just mentally feeling out of it, feeling sleepy, etc., but that I simply can't lift as much. I notice this real quick: if I eat only 1500 calories tomorrow, I will be sure to have lost a whole set of reps! I didn't realize that that was what was going on at first, and had thought I'd reached a training plateau...what had actually happened was my muscles wasting away! I'm pretty young (26) and I don't don't exercise or work out too much. In fact, I spend most of my time at my dest working on my research. Oh and one more thing. I'm not starving myself. In fact, I have a rule that whenever I'm hungry I eat something. Its just that I eat things like steamfresh brocolli, which has 120 calories per bag, steamfresh Asian Medely which has 120 calories per bag, Fat Free Ball Park Beef Franks (50 calories per Hot Dog), Nature's Own Double Fiber Wheat Bread (50 calories per slice), Puffed Wheat cereal (60 calories per serving), Fat Free Pringles, etc. You can get used to feeling hungry, or a low-calorie "state of being," such that you're no longer consciously hungry at calorie consumption points you would have been previously...I'd also noticed that my sex drive went straight through the floor on a healthy low-cal diet...?!?! I mean, to the point where, then, after eating a pound cake, I got horny as hell! With these foods, I've got to almost FORCE myself to eat more than 1000 calories per day by doing things like going to a fast food resteraunt or ordering a pizza. So am I doing something wrong? Depends on what your goals are. If you simply want to lose weight, as in numbers on a bathroom scale, it seems like you're doing just fine. In terms of athletic performance, you're almost certainly just losing muscle, and not so much fat. In terms of general health and fitness, well, that's probably not such a pretty-looking picture, either. |
