Considering a protein powder yes/no?
Hello all-
i am thinking about adding a protein powder as a drink in the morning. Is anyone else drinking them as part of their food plan?? I am not the biggest breakfast eater but I have made myself eat something because I know it is good. I was thinking that I would mix it up with some soy or skim milk and take it to work with me. I do drink a cup of tea first thing in the morning with milk and sugar(trying to use raw sugar and as little as possible but I love a good cup of tea!) Does anyone have any recommendations on brands that taste good, aren't too expensive but have good nutritional value etcc Should I buy one at the supermarket or go to a health food store? Thanks D |

Thanks D Adding a protein powder is an easy way to increase your protein intake. My usual breakfast is oatmeal, protein powder and ground flax seed (200 calories). This gives me a good ratio of carbs/protein/good fats to start the day. Both of the products I use mix well with milk, etc. Some I've tried don't mix well and taste like crap I've tried many different powders and always go back to Carb Solutions or Myoplex Lite. I prefer the vanilla flavors but the other flavors are good, too. I can find the Carb Solutions at the grocery store but haven't seen the Myoplex at my local grocery. I'm sure you could find the Myoplex at a health or drug store in your area. I order many of these types of products online. The Carb Solutions has a better price and I like it just as well as the Myoplex. wrote: I once bought "whey protein", which actually tasted quite good, like milk powder (which it almost is). Some are flavored and some, like mine, are unflavored. You can find it for not too much (per gram of protein) at various places and websites. I would not go to a health store specifically to get it, they all get it from same sources, but health stores charge more. Ask in misc.fitness.weights where are good deals on protein powders on the internet, you would be unlikely to find a better local deal. I like eggs better though. i I like eggs better too (and eat lots of them), but for the quantity of protein provided, eggs have quite a lot more calories than whey protein (over twice as many), due to the fat content. And besides, I don't want to eat them in my breakfast cereal :-). Chris 262/130s/130s started dieting July 2002, maintaining since June 2004 |

Probably the cheapest source of protein is dried egg white powder .. one tablespoon is equal to 11.5 grams of protein: http://www.incredibody.com/proteinpowder.html Or liquid egg whites at Eggology: http://www.eggology.com/home.htm As far as protein powders there are ALOT that are liek drinking wall paper paste, but I especially like the Costco brand of chocolate protein powder. Its a 5lb container for under $20, tastes like thin chocolate milk. Joanne |

And besides I like the taste of my whey protein. I like the taste of whole eggs better than whey protein, but egg whites alone don't turn me on much one way or the other. Or liquid egg whites at Eggology: http://www.eggology.com/home.htm Definitely can't see this in cereal. I do use them in cooking, but that's about it. As far as protein powders there are ALOT that are liek drinking wall paper paste, but I especially like the Costco brand of chocolate protein powder. I'll check out the Costco brand, though since I mostly use this to add to cereal I don't know about chocolate -- might be okay. But certainly in shakes or as a cooked side thing. You can spice up plain egg whites with some chopped veggies and lowfat cheese in it into make an omellote for example. I like the brand I use -- Life Time Fitness. I'll check out the Costco brand, though since I mostly use this to add to cereal I don't know about chocolate -- might be okay. It comes in vanilla too :-) joanne |

I've done this occasionally, but -- especially now that I'm maintaining -- I prefer to spend more calories and eat the whole egg. I like the brand I use -- Life Time Fitness.
