Default Maintenance question

So I have a question: For those of you who have lost weight successfully and
are in maintenance, if you *did* weigh and measure in "diet" mode, did you stop
in maintenance? Or are you continuing to weigh and measure to ensure that your
portion size doesn't go up?

I never weighed and measured since I eat all my meals out. I always
used the "eyeball" method, combined with menu items I'm familiar with
at restaurants, certain types of foods (i.e., fish with vegetables and
no starch), and regular weighing.

All through weight loss and through the beginning of maintenance I
weighed myself almost every day. Then I slowed it down to once a week,
then twice a month, where I've kept it ever since. The only time I
change my weighing pattern is if I see a change; then I weigh more
often til I'm back in range.

I don't do a lot of body fat measurement since my workout routine is
pretty steady, and it hasn't varied a lot. A better measure is if my
jeans don't fit right, because I wear slim cut jeans in a small size,
so there's not a lot of room for variation in my body size. If I weigh
the same and they don't fit it has to be from either bloat or fat,
because there's more volume to one pound of fat or water than one
pound of muscle.

Anyway, those are the things I use to stay on top of it,.

What about calorie density. I pint of double cream (one of my
favourite "bad" foods!) is well over 2000 calories. Sounds like a lot
to me.

Controlling food by weight is more complicated than by volume.

Put food on kitchen scale, then look at results?

Works for me.

Spoken like a true agnostic. Or maybe even an atheist depending on how
you interpret Lennon.

If God had intended for people to rely on Him/Her for weight-control,
then S/he would never have invented obesity.

What works in weight-loss works in maintenance. There is nothing
"abnormal" about practicing conscientious portion control.

What I meant by "more normal feeling," in this case, is what the bulk (excuse
the word of folks do...which is eat without measuring.

I understand, but please understand that the bulk of folks are
overweight and obese. That approach may not be the best approach for
you.

I'm not talking about
dropping "conscientious portion control," only the weighing, measuring, and
calorie counting aspect of it.

YMMV. I have found that I can do most of my weighing and measuring by
eye, but calorie counting isn't something ingrained since birth, so I
still do that manually, and since I'm not likely to ingrain a new
skill, probably will do so forever.

Again YMMV, and that's really the point: If you want to try an
experiment and see if you do okay without one or two of these new
behaviors you trained yourself on, to aid in your weight-loss, that's
great. I'd recommending thinking about it differently: That what
you're doing now is normal, and you're engaging in an experiment to
see if you can live abnormally, i.e., without weighing everything.

I'd also recommend making smaller changes... not dropping any
hard-learned behavior outright, but perhaps choosing one or the other
(weighing and measuring, OR calorie counting) to start with, and even
then, only seeing how you do without it in certain circumstances, or
on certain days of the week, to start.

The problem with all the weighing, measuring and counting is it tends to make
me hyperfocus on my eating and my weight. While that's advantageous when I'm
trying to lose weight, or when keeping my weight level is a struggle, it's not
a good place for my mind to be on a ongoing basis.

Again, YMMV. I think most of America would benefit from more mindful
eating behaviors.
