A list of low-calorie foods
It seems like whenever I pick up a cook book about losing weight,
including one where there are Splenda recipes, I am struck by the fact that the reicpes are NOT low calorie for the most part. Even Hoods, which makes the dairy drink made from nonfat milk at 45 cal per cup, provides recipes on their website with things like peanut butter in them. Unbelievable. Anyway, here is my list of low calorie foods and very simple recipes for those seriously seeking Low-cal foods. 1. Farina..the old cream of wheat has 120 cal per serving. 2. Grits have 130 cal per serving. 3. Oats have 150 cal per serving. 4. Puffed 100% whole wheat and puffed 100% rice have 60 cal per cup. Use the nonfat Hoods and Splenda and you get a very-low cal cereal. As far as I know the only whole grain cereals are oats, puffed rice, puffed wheat, puffed corn and shredded wheat. Many cereals contain whole grain, but they have lots of other stuff in there too, like sugar, fat, perservatives, etc. 5. Blueberries. Larger sized ones are 70 cal per cup. Strawberries are a little higher but also low cal. 6. Most salad ingredients including lettuce, spinach, cauliflower, cucumbers, peppers, onions, radishes. 7. a plain baked potato with 100 cal for a med large one. 8. For a dessert I like meringues, made from Splenda, vanilla, and egg whites only. Mix on high about 5 min. For six eggs use a splash of vanilla and about 15 Splenda small packets. Spoon out onto brown paper and bake at 320 degrees F. for about 10 min. Turn them over by sliding a knife underneath them and bake another 10 min. These are scrumptious...not as good as the ones with sugar, but those aren't low cal. 9.Lite breads like Nature's Own with 40 cal per regular sized slice. Toast them and put some sugar-free jam on them. If you want whole wheat, Sarah Lee makes a bread under the name Delightful that has 45 cal. per slice. Regular bread has anywhere from 60 to 120 cal per slice. 10 Yojo. Another wonderful dessert. Mix half a 6 oz. flavored nonfat yoghurt (40 cal) with sugar-free jello (one pack has 20 cal) Make the jello as directed and when cold and set blend together the yoghurt and jello in a blender. Place in the freezer for about half an hour. It makes two large desserts with just 60 cal each. dkw |
