Default maintenance and Atkins for Life

I'm closing in on goal weight, and previously someone advised me to get a copy
of Atkins for Life, which just came out in paperback. I did, even though I'm
not following Atkins.

I just finished it, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has reached goal
weight, regardless of which plan you followed to get there. Yeah, there's a
lot of Atkins-specific material, but even if you're not an Atkins-ite, most of
the advice can be applied to generic weight maintenance.

I'm not aware of another book dedicated almost entirely to the post-weight-loss
phase, which is reason enough to get it, IMO. I even discussed it with my SO,
who's been on Weight Watchers maintenance for 3 years. He said that WW more or
less tells people their maintenance points and sets them loose, with no further
guidance. I'm buying him his own copy.

I liked that Dr. Atkins gave a clearer picture (compared to DANDR) of what
foods to add back in when upping carbs. He also discussed eating at various
types of restaurants, coping with skeptical doctors and relatives, and special
occasion meals. There are 30 sample menus for 4 different levels of carb
intake, as well as for 10 holiday meals. It was also a much better written
book than DANDR, for which I am extremely grateful because DANDR struck me as
disorganized. YMMV.

I forget who suggested I buy the book (Doug F, maybe?), but whoever it was,
thanks again.
