Saccharin

That's interesting to know. I did have some adverse effects from big servings of Equal. It used to be my favorite artificial sweetner. Of course it's nothing scientific, but I thought I narrowed down my problem to equal. wrote in message ups.com... On Aug 16, 7:21 am, "Greens" wrote: I've heard it both ways. Saccharin has been in use since the early nineteen hundreds with no problems and saccharin is a poison that makes you fat. Anyone have an opinion on this artificial sweetner? I'd be lost without it at this point since I put it in smoothees that would otherwise be pretty flavorless in my opinion. Saccharin is by far my least favorite of the big three: I like Equal best, followed a close second by Splenda, followed way down by saccharin. I would use Saccharin if I had health concerns about the other two or if nothing else was available though. It just leaves a bitter aftertaste for me. I think all three are very safe. I eat a LOT of artificial sweetner...about 100 packs a day or equivalent if you include the sugar free stuff I eat like diet pop and sugar-free syrup, sugar free pudding, etc. I like my cereal, diet pop (at least 10 cups a day) and meringues. Since I am vegetarian, I eat 10 egg whites a day to get protein...I make a sugar-free meringue with them using 25 packs of Splenda. Then I eat them with a little sugar free Smuckers. Probably too much, I know, but I don't plan to change since it helped me lose 95 pounds and keep it off. I'll be the guinea pig (gladly). If I drop dead, I'll be sure and warn everybody. Hooked on the stuff and loving it. dkw- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Well, it's fairly easy to avoid aspartame if that is the problem. Thank goodness the others taste good with no side effects. Splenda carries a warning about possible diarrhea if you eat way to much. Amazing how difficult it was to find out that Splenda has 4 cal per packet. Of course since it is under 5 they round it off to zero. Probably if they labeled their product as containing 4 calories, some people would use another product. I tried emailing the company several times before they finally wrote back to explain the facts and they were defensive about the fact that there are calories in their product. Since they also sell granular Splenda that measure like sugar, some people use a lot of it in baking and the calories do become significant. There again, they list the serving size as 1 teaspoon and list the calories as 0, but there are actually 4 calories per teaspoon for the granular type. ( The granular type and packet type do not measure the same. They are different mixtures, so one teaspoon of the packet Splenda would be more like 12 calories. Equal is also 4 cal per packet and Saccharin is closer to 3 cal/pack. dkw |

Each packet of artificial sweetner has roughly 4 calories, so I am still getting about 400 cal a day from all the sweetner. That would escalate to 3200 calories if it were sugar, though. Since I only consume 1900 cal per day, that wouldn't work out too well. dkw Have you tried the tablets? Each tablet weighs something like 0.05g -- no room for calories in there! |

Yes, but not for a long time. What I recall is not dissolving the little buggar well enough and catching a bitter taste. As I recall they are tiny. They also make liquid drops so you can get just the right amount without guessing. I'm sure those have only fractional calories too per drop. If I liked saccharin, I think I'd use the drops at home. dkw |

I dunno -- I'm not much of a cook. Experimental. If it works, I'll post my little recipe to the lc group. Otherwise I'll just keep my mouth shut ;p |

My bank, YMCA, McDonalds, Bookstore and several restaurants all serve coffee which I drink...and they also have Equal and/or Splenda out so I always take 3 or 4 packets even though I don't use it in coffee. When I buy it, I buy the generic stuff at Walmart, where it is 3 cents for Splenda substitute, 2 cents for Equal substitute and 1 cent per pack for the Sweet n Low substitute. Because I bake Meringues, I buy Splenda...cause I don't like the taste of Saccharin which is OK to heat along with Splenda, but they warn that Equal breaks down at high heat, so I don't cook with it. I do use it on almost everything else though. dkw |
