Default Ode to Mountain Dew

Today's my first day in, oh, twenty years that I haven't had any mountain
dew. (I drink, I mean drank, the diet stuff.) Quite a few people have
"mentioned" that I drink a lot of the stuff. In my son's words, "Dad,
Mountain Dew is going to be your downfall."

A couple weeks ago I bought 25 bottles on sale & they were gone in 9 or 10
days. I knew I was drinking 2-3 bottles a day, 2 liter bottles, but seeing
the pantry fill up and then empty out just kind of hit me.

For now, I've been drinking other diet soda w. caffeine + water. I plan to
go to something like a couple cups of tea in the morning, eventually. Right
now, stopping drinking that one drink is a big enough step for me.

A gallon and a half a day!

I have a similar problem with Diet Coke.

I am now trying to cut back by switching off with iced tea.

I suppose I should try cutting back on caffiene, but the boost really
gets me through the afternoon.

I drink tons of Diet Pepsi, myself. Occasionally I make some effort
to cut back, but I usually backslide. In the scheme of things it's
not one of my big worries, but maybe someday :-).

Once upon a time I was like that. I'd have multiple cokes and mt. dews per
day to get me thru the day. Of course I drank it by the 12oz and 20oz
can/bottles and not by the liter.

It took me about a year to switch from coke to diet coke. That was probably
my biggest step and one I took about 9 yrs ago. I've never looked back.
I can't drink non-diet soda any more. And when it comes to the diet stuff,
its diet coke, diet pepsi and that's about it. (sprite, mt dew, etc just
don't do it for me).

I also started cutting back on the amount of soda in an effort to cut back
on caffeine. Its been several years that I've been to the point where I
can't drink caffeine after 3pm or I have trouble falling to sleep at night.

Now I'm down to my one 12oz can in the mornings (I don't do coffee) for my
caffeine boost and I'm good. I"ll typically drink tea at lunch, and
thru-out the day I'll drink water or juice and in the evenings I'll have the
occasional beer or glass of wine with dinner.

I'll tell you, it took me a couple of years of slow changes to get to this
point. Now I know I can't do too much caffeine, can't do the sugary
drinks, don't do well with fatty foods, don't like fast food... etc. It
just doesn't even taste right any more.

One change at a time and you'll get there too.

Good for you!!

I'm same way.... was a HUGE Mt Dew drinker..... until
started having severe gastro problems..... GERD

Mt Dew has something in it called brominated vegetable
oil. Read up on it. Not god stuff.

So....I weaned off Mt dew and now drinking diet coke
with splenda. Hope to wean off it eventually

Oh.... I think Mt Dew was the only soda that have BVO
(brominated veg oil)

Possibly ADD? Stimulants effect "hyperactive" people differently.

It's only a "disorder" if your life doesn't work well. Therefore
for me it isn't a disorder. So call it a trait then. I have ADHT.
Not nearly as recognizable but it is the same thing.

Coffee? I do use it to relax me so I can sleep easily. When
I get woke up by the on-call pager the last thing I want to do
is have a cup of coffee and doze off. Been there, done that,
learned my lesson.

I was "diagnosed" as being hyperactive at the age of 7 or 8, in the late
60's. I've always considered it a blessing. I get along fine "the way I am".

Caffeine is a weird drug for me. Wakes me up in the morning, gets me through
the day & puts me to sleep at night.

My quitting of mountain dew was a failure. All I did was drink the same
amounts of other kinds of sodas I didn't like. I did see that I have it in
me to really cut down on caffeine by drinking no-caf sodas, but f-it. I'm
fat. I smoke. I drink too much soda. All things given, those are the biggest
problems I have health-wise, in order by my personal priorities.

Non-ADD folks can't seem to focus down to nearly the level
ADD folks can. But are *they* called "Focus Deficit Disorder"
folks? Nope. Being in the majority, they're just the fuzzy
masses. I found a job where borderline ADD is an advantage
not a disadvantage - that focus ability works great in IT.

One major thing at a time I guess. Focus over fuzzy!
