Just curious... If I walk in cold weather while purposely wearing
clothes that make me feel cold, how many calories would I lose through
heat loss?

you'd probably lose more with the cold that followed IMHO

I doubt it would be enough to be noticeable or worth the discomfort.
But I don't know the numbers.

I've not been around long enough to know if you usually ask thought
provoking questions from time to time regarding dieting and weight loss. So
far, you have me convinced that you plan to starve yourelf in the cold just
to see what will happen. Elise.

I have to agree with the others.... You're not going to burn that many
extra calories and you'll just be freezing and uncomfortable for nothing.

I also did some back onthe envelope calculations and I think that it
did cost me a few hundred calories.

i,
about every couple of months, someone in here posts about the LOWERED
temperature/calorie burning thing.
i think if you GOOGLE this you will see, that the calories spent, due to
cold are minimal.

``If you are too scantily clad (or have little body fat) and your body
becomes chilled, you will need more calories to stay warm. For
example, scantily clad research subjects who exercised in the cold (14
degrees F) burned 13% more calories than when they performed the same
exercise at room temperature--about 450 vs 400 calories per hour.''

i,
as i posted, i think if you GOOGLE this you will find conflicting
research results!

Supposedly you burn a few more calories in colder weather, but your
definition of cold and the one that actually burns calories may be quite
different. My husband has an outdoor job and walks miles a day. When it
gets below -10 F he starts noticing that he's more hungry after working
outside or that he has an easier time losing weight regardless of what he
eats, and he is dressed appropriately for the weather. In the polar
regions, winter campers eat things like butter sticks, etc. to keep warm but
we're again talking way sub zero weather and lots of physical activity.

Put on a coat.

I dunno, I walked for 40 minutes to train in 34 degree (F) weather in
a polo shirt and I enjoyed it. My wife freaked out when she saw me at
the train station (we take the same train).

I also did some back onthe envelope calculations and I think that it
did cost me a few hundred calories.

I have kind of high tolerance to heat and cold (when I move) for some
reason.

You'd better make damn sure you warm up your muscles/joints before
venturing out into the cold with inadequate protection.

Exercising with cold stiff muscles/joints is very bad for you. For
example, many cyclists end up with mullered knees because they cycle in
cold weather with no leg protection.

The cons far outweigh the pros on this I think - you'd be better off
wrapping up properly and taking the "scenic route" to burn some extra C's.

A significant amount if you walk long enough.
