I have been reading here for about amonth now, and have posted replies to a
couple of messages. My wife and I have been eating low carb for about 2
months now and have been pretty happy with the results. I say pretty happy
because there is still a part of me that says the weight can't come off fast
enough, though I know that there are limitiations.

For anyone out there who is currently lurking and is thining about posting,
I also wanted to pass on a warning about making sure your posting identity
does not trace back to your real email account. The first time I tried to
post, I accidentally sent a reply to the person who posted the original
message rather than the newsgroup. Very shortly after that, I started
receiving numerous spam emails that contained a virus. I don't know
conclusively if that person is responsible or not and it is possible they
have a virus on their computer and don't even know it, but my reply
co-incides with the start of the problem. Fortunately, none of them were
able to get onto my computer because they were filtered either my the mail
server or by my anti-virus software. The number of attack emails escalated
to where I was getting hit about 10 -12 times a day all from apparently
random locations. Finally, after 2.5 hours on the phone with five different
people and two trips to my service providers office, the problem has been
resolved, though at the expense of my previous email identity. So, for
anyone who is thinking about posting, please be aware that there may be nuts
out there who are scanning newsgroups for possible target addresses and make
sure you take appropriate steps.

this is a problem with any NG, and even just sending out email in general.
don't worry too much about it. the connection between posting here and
getting viruses is probably just coincidence.

I get hundreds of spam mails every day. most are filtered out by aol's spam
filter (on my aol email) or by OE on this account. maybe a dozen get past a
day now.

virus and worm email is even less of a threat if you buy antiviral software
and have it installed and regularly updated, they just get killed when they
come in. no reason to change your email address at all, no reason to hide.
if you want the privacy mung your address up some so the robot email address
harvesters get a bum address.

There is a virus going around that harvests email addresses off of
newsgroups. If you are now using your new address, it will soon start to
get them, the only way to avoid it is to use a phony email address. You can
antispam it, for example Put the remove in with
the ISP part of the address, otherwise your ISP will have to expend energy
searchine for an unknown person. This way, it won't even get to an ISP.

I also just discovered something else new that may be of interest. I guess
that outlook, which a lot of people probably use it by default since its
there and free, has different identies for newgroups and for email. I
discovered this since after I changed the email identity and posted this
message, which posted with my old email address. I then saw that in
accounts/properties there is a different identity for the news servers. In
some ways, I feel that the little things that Big Brother...err..Microsoft
puts in the programs you don't know about only to find out about later.

Regarding AOL's spam filter, I spoke with my grandfather this evening. He
said that he really likes the filter and that it works very well. He said
that before he had it on, he received 167 spam mails in the course of about
1 week of not checking his email.

I don't know anything about a virus, but spambots have been harvesting email
addresses from newsgroup messages for years now.

If you don't want to be spammed, munge your email address.

Unfortunately I learned that too late and get a ton of spam. At work I
receive two group email addresses that are on our website, and I get dozens
and dozens of spam, virus and klez-style bounces every day.

Bloody spam is really costing businesses a lot, it must really be a killer
for the small ones.

Perhaps people who like to hack and write viruses should turn their energies
to spam-fighting, then the world would love them instead of loathing them!
