I think that was in my description, but I said they were bigger than a
softball. Cutting up a soccer ball sized one would be quite a task!

| Maybe. Heh.
|
| I used google images to look up pictures of "swede" and,
| aside from some very peculiar things (dinosaurs, guitars,
| cars, and pingpong), they showed both what I would call
| a turnip, and what I would call a rutabaga. There were
| twice as many images of rutabagas as turnips, if that's
| any help.
|
| Someone said that rutabagas can be as big as softballs.
| I wish to state for the record that I have recently
| purchased one nearly as big as a soccer ball. The
| flesh cooks up a golden yellow.
|
| Hoping this helps, but having my doubts.

We usually either dice swede and boil it or you can mash it

You are absolutely right; it doesn't. In fact, I loathe, with
a big dripping loathing, mashed rutabagas (or mashed turnips).

But you just grate some and pan fry it like hashbrowned
potatoes; you'll be surprised. I was all ready to say
Yuck Argh I'm Poisoned, and I ate the whole plateful.

April.

I usually get my husband to do the first cut.

The other technique is to cut only a small piece off of one side, so it lays
flat on the cutting board and doesn't shift, then to cut small pieces off
all sides, all around till you get it whittled down.

Chuckle. I like almost all above-ground veggies, but I despise
bell peppers. I like almost all below-ground veggies, but I
despise parsnips.

There's no need to worry they will sneak up on you. They have
a very intense smell. Any non-smoker will be able to tell them
up wind. Even a smoker will be able to tell them down wind.

One of my favorite dishes is to cook carrots with parsnips together, then
put butter, salt & pepper and a dash of lemon juice on them. Omigoodness
it is awesomely good.

Another interesting side-note. Once I tasted FRESH cooked Ginseng root.
Tasted just like a little bitty parsnip.
