Default Day 18 of 100 Days

Day 18 and scale still at 229

Just got on my scale and it is hovering at 229 and wants to go lower.
Maybe tomorrow.

I had about 550 calories yesterday, 3 slices of cheese and a small
bowl of cherry-tomatoes that my wife grew. This is a good reduction in
calories for me, and I'm going to try to be especially good this month
of September. I'm going for about the same number of calories today,
although tomorrow, before hiking, I'm going to boost it a bit so I am
able to make it up to our campsite without stopping every two hundred
yards.

One thing about yesterday impressed me again: I had my last of three
slices of cheese later last night and it was only after that slice
that I began to feel hungry. For me, eating (or the opportunity to eat
food I at least find palatable) makes me hungry. Going without food is
much less hunger-intensifying.

I didn't go up my hill yesterday – I was trying to reroute the water
to put in a new toilet (and had to turn the house's water off), but it
turns out that the new toilet would have fit without the rerouting
(although when we tested it the first time, it didn't seem to be
anywhere near fitting). Now I have to repair a hole in the drywall.
But I learned something about this business and it was kind of fun.

I hope everyone has a great day and a great month ahead! I hope we can
be "good enough for long enough!"

Yours,

Caleb

Keep up the good work Caleb. I predict we'll each be down another pound
tomorrow.

I have been on a 1500 calorie diet for a week and nothing has
happened. In fact, I gained some weight. This is insanity!

I am losing hope!

I think I am at the point where it is the "law of diminished returns,"
and I cannot go lower anymore.

I talked to my
nutritionist and he said our bodies need around 1500 just to function

I believe your nutritionist is considering 1500 calories per day to be the
rate below which your resting metabolism will start to fall off. It's not
that it will all at once go to zero, just that it will start to go down. The
number 1500 sounds high to me. My own nutritionist is at the VA and has the
benefit of my complete medical history and current blood chemistry. For me
she says 800. Maybe get a second opinion?

Another thing. There is not a one-for-one relationship between calories
taken in and scale weight. I mean, imagine eating 1000 calories worth of
turnips and then stepping on the scales! There is a lot of chemistry going
on, and it all takes time.

Don't give up. Keep on trying, 'cause it's really, really gonna work. Trust
me!

I can't lay my hands on the articles now but I'm sure that I've read
that a lot of the lowered metabolism comes about by restriction of
exercise, and that if people maintained (or increased somewhat) their
exercise levels while restricting calories, this would lead to a basic
maintenance of their basal metabolic rate.

Linda -- I can remember having breakfast once with my mother about 15
years ago and thinking this whole thing was hopeless, especially
following back surgery and this removing for me my major source of
weight stabilization. But as Lazy says below:

Don't give up. Keep on trying, 'cause it's really, really gonna work. Trust
me!
