Default I think I'm addicted to food and alergic to exercising!

I think I'm addicted to food - correction - carbs and junk food. I've
never been a good eater my whole life. I hate most vegetables! I
really do wish I liked veggies and liked healthy food. Has there been
a study done about people's taste buds being different?? cause I don't
get it! healthy food tastes gross! is it just me and the way I taste
things? or is that really how they taste?? I have to choke it down
half the time and it's really an awful experience. Sometimes I think
I'm just crazy and to suck it up and force myself to eat it and I'll
get use to it but that only lasts for so long and then I can't take it
anymore. Back to eating the same junk/crap as usual. I feel so
guilty and hopeless when this happens and I don't know what to do. I
feel hopeless. I feel I have no control. I've tried starving myself
before because I hate food so much but that doesn't last long at
all...it's almost as if as soon as I think about starving myself, I go
to the cupboard and start eating.....can anybody help me? or am I a
lost cause?

I wonder how old you are. I didn't like veggies much before I turned 22 and
started eating chinese. I looked down on anything that wasn't meat. Salad
dressings disgusted me. Veggies were boring. Of course back then all my
veggies came out of cans. They were gross. I don't eat that stuff today.

Once I started eating chinese (essentially stir fried fresh veggies) I loved
the stuff. I eventually grew to like tofu. These days I love greens which
are basically boiled leaves. I like creamy dressings. It took years for me
change those attitudes, but don't get me wrong the changes haven't been for
the good. I'm heavier now than ever. And it's a bad thing to learn to like
salad dressings. They're full of saturated fats and calories.

So maybe our taste buds change with time. My guess is that a lot of it is
mental. On the other hand veggies without soy sauce or creamy dressings are
inedible to me. I'll eat them that way sometimes, but it's not enjoyable.

You have to "train" yourself to like food. You can do it cold turkey,
but just refusing to eat high calorie foods...I am not opposed to
carbs at all, just fat and high-cal. foods. I simply do not eat them.
I prefer them, but you cannot trust your animal instincts where food
is concerned. Nature says you should eat lots of high fat foods to
survive even though we haven't had to do that for thousands of years
for the most part. When you get hungry enough, even the veggies you
don't care for are passable. I love ice cream, peanut butter, chocolae
chip cookies, pecan pie, etc. etc., but I refuse to eat a small
portion cause that would only make it WORSE. I went pretty much cold
turkey from your kind of diet and 230 lbs. to very little fat and a
vegetarian diet. That was 3 years ago, and I've weighed 135 lbs. for
almost 2 years now. You have to count those calories though. That
means you can still eat those foods you mentioned, but not so much. I
much prefer to eat LOTS of low calorie foods. That's what works for
me, but it might be completely different for you, although you have to
count calories no matter what kind of diet you are on. dkw

hey sounds like me. I didn't like veggies until I was like 25.
veggies are gross, bitter!

I also started liking veggies when I eat more vegetarian chinese and
thai.

You know sooner or later u have to eat veggies.
So for starters, u could try cooked spinach or cauliflower. Eat plenty
of fibre, like brown rice, wholewheat stuff etc... etc...
Some Chinese mock pork are made of mushroom's stem. I swear some are
frigteningly real ! (beware though, many contains food additives like
msg). what bout steamed cabbage roll? if u cook soup, just add some
frozen chopped spinach, and it wont taste like veggie, practically
tasteless. Mixture of mayo and sliced carrots eaten with fries are
delicious.

There are 'healthy junk food & soda' from organic stores u could try
for your cravings.
There's even high quality vegetable extract in liquid or powder form.

thank you for all your replies. I will try some of your suggestions.
I am 28 years old, 5'5", and about 225 lbs.
I recently broke up with my boyfriend, who i believed, would sabatoge
me and my diets. He was very controlling and jealous. He also didn't
have very good eating habits and we both didn't like to cook so I
think I developed some bad habits from him as well. I'm back at my
parents house now and hopefully I will be able to afford to move out
on my own in september. For now, I eat whatever my mom makes for
dinner, which is usually a healthy meal but once the weekends
come...it's over..mcdonalds it is. I also drink beer. Which I need
to stop doing, not only for my weight, but for other reasons.

I did that once - train myself to eat healthier foods, totally gave up ice
cream, pizza and chips. It worked for less than five years and this is very
common with diets. One day I was at the beach. I was thin. I saw these kids
buying hot dogs and having fun and I never wanted a hot dog so bad in my
life. I could have cried, lol. I got tired of not being able to eat what I
wanted. I went back to pizza and chips. I ate more veggies. I'd eat spinach
pie (lotsa cheese) and pretty soon I was fatter than ever.

I don't mean to be negative. That's just the way it was. I fell off the
wagon.

Of course that's not the end of the story. The weight came back on
unbelievably fast. I went from being in total control to being out of
control. It was very depressing. I felt it was something happening to me,
but at the same time I knew if I was good enough, I could control it so the
blame was all on me.

There are always signs that you are off your diet. Things like NOT
weighing yourself and not working out are 2 of them. Also, you know
from the moment it starts that you are off your diet. Diets fail when
people cannot make some transition from dieting to maintenance and
this is common. If you make the transition reasonable and monitor any
changes, you'll be OK though. I weigh myself every day. I did get up
to 140 a few weeks ago and so I reduced my calories from 2300 to 1800
and lost the 5 pounds. I never intended to eat 2300 cal, but realized
after a few months of gradually gaining the 5 pounds that I was using
a nonstandard Tablespoon to measure my farina and grits, so was
getting a lot more than I thought. Now I am at 135 and consume 1900
cal. This is very reasonable for me and has to do with the quantity of
food, not the quality. My diet consists of oatmeal with blueberries,
egg beaters for protein, lots of salads without dressing, nonfat
pudding, toast with the Promise fat free, a bowl of farina mixed with
grits...a really big bowl. I eat a lot of oats and reducing the
calories involved just decreasing the oatmeal by 3 bowls-ful a day.

I am single so I don't have to feel guilty about not eating someone's
cooking or going the their fav. restaurant which might leave me with
nothing much to eat. I always go to the same few restaurants that have
good salad bars. My daughter is also vegetarian, so it makes it a lot
easier, though, because she likes the salad bar restaurants, but
usually gets cheese pizza. I do not eat cheese because it is too fat.
I know this is a boring diet, but I LOVE it and get a lot of good food
to eat. I will NEVER be fat again. Like I said it has been over 2
years and it is not really difficult for me at this point to maintain
my weight. I also work out 6X a week, am 61 years old and in the best
shape I've ever been...not counting my older age of course. BP, heart
rate, cholesterol are all LOW.

I agree it is difficult to maintain a routine if you were ever
overweight cause you tend to slide back into old habits...but once you
are commited, really commited to weight loss AND then maintenance, you
won't gain the weight back. That's where I am.

There are lots of different ways to diet and maintain your new weight
successfully. My way would not work for many people perhaps out of
boredom, pressures from work or their significant other, etc.
etc. ....but, once someone makes the commitment, it does and will work
PERMANENTLY. dkw
