Default Began Nutrisystem

A couple of days so far. The food is fairly tasty (although I will
probably use the dessert biscotti to scrape paint off baseboards- there
are some losers). Mentally, it's easier for me to take a measured
portion than to try and cook/prepare a measured portion. I certainly am
seeing how much I was overeating simply in ignoring portions.

I did grab a piece of pizza at work and had a watching-baseball pigfit
of several of the Nutrisystem snacks- the chips are very good.

I am continuing to finish up "regular" food from the fridge, and am
again startled by how small the *proper* portions from Nutrisytem are
for a 1200-cal day (it's assumed you'll add fruit and veg). The little
meals are very dense! Which is what I need at work- I work third shift,
and get a sort of gnawing hunger that I think is a stress/cortisol
response from simply being awake all night. And there's often something
junky to grab and eat, so eating a dense Nutrisystem lunch or dinner at
1 a.m. is a big help.

Loved the description of the biscotti

Portion control is probably a real eye opener for many people. We've
become accustomed to the large servings in restaurants. One of my pet
peeves are small bags on food items that most people eat as a single
serving but the nutrition label is for 2 or 2 1/2 servings. Geez....do
they expect people to eat just half of that small bag of pretzelsg

Congrats on starting the program.

I had a moment of weakness last week that involved a vending machine
and a package of twinkies. I looked at the back and saw "150
calories". Well, gee, *that's* not as bad as it could be. Then I saw
serving size, "One Twinkie". Huh? Excuse me? How many people have
ever cracked open a package of twinkies from a vending machine and then
looked around for someone to give the other serving to? I'm annoyed at
hostess now.

As far a portion control goes, I think the best thing I've done to
help my new WOE is to invest in an electronic scale. I weigh out my
breakfast cereal now. A serving is alot less than I had been eating. I
weight out the potatoes and pasta I eat. I weigh my meat and salad
dressings. I actually feel like I'm in control of my portion size,
instead of just eyeballing it and hoping for the best. And yeah, the
"real" portion size of things can often be a real eye opener.

Amen to that! I too use an electronic scale for weighing out my portions.
Got a little self-conscious about taking it to restaurants, but if they
stare or ask - hey I can tell them I lost 157lbs without pills or surgery!

As far as the labeled portions go, I agree totally. Like for peanut butter,
2 tbsp is one serving. I can make a sandwich with just 1 tbsp. And I've
noticed on things like frozen pizzas the serving sizes have jumped. For
example the Jack's Pizza (by Kraft) has changed their serving size total
from 4 servings @ 250cal a slice to like 3 servings at 350cal a slice(or
something close to that). I emailed them and asked about it and the response
I got was that the government guidelines change from time to time so they
have had to keep up with it....

Thank you.

I started taking the lunch with me to work (I work nights). My weakest
point is after I've been at work a couple of hours, after coffee, around
1-2a. I tried eating the lunch then and picking at my salad for the rest
of the night. Turned down the strawberry shortcake co-worker brought in
and didn't even feel like eating the Nutri dinner. I ate about 1000
calories in all, and realized that that's not enough for a regular
basis. However, as I know myself, I'm in no real danger of undereating
for any significant period of time, like two days in a row.

I signed up for a lot of extra work for the summer, and the Nutri could
really help, as things tend to unravel with extra work and summer
humidity (which I can't stand). I really think this is great training
for portion control.

And I really like the "100 pounds, one at a time" idea from one poster,
and will now adopt that for my sig. Works a lot better than "80 pounds,
however long it takes."

It could have been worse. It could easily have said something like "150
calories per serving, approximately 8 servings per package."

I have a Scaleman brand electronic scale that I luckily picked up at a
second-hand store for $4 or $5. It works well, has a switch to go from US to
metric measurements(very helpful for measuring cereal!), has a bunch of
other features but I don't use them.

I figure a good scale may be $15-$20, found these on eBay:

I used to use a regular scale, but after a while it broke. Love the digital
scale....

Watch out for NutriSystems. I lost 37 pounds in abiut 19 weeks and when
I failed to lose for two consecutive weeks they told me to re-register
or quit.

Mine is a "Good Cook" model, and I bought it at walmart. I am very
happy with it. It is easy to zero out the scale, so I can say weight
salad dressing as I add it to my bowl O' greens, and it easily switches
from grams to pounds/ounces, even mid weight.

It's not very fancy, doesn't look that cook or anything, but it
certainly gets the job done.
