Default 11 minute mile

Chris is such an inspiration. Holding in the back of my mind the idea
of running a 5K this summer, I'm trying to force myself to keep going
through the times when I want to do a rest interval. After 15 months of
doing interval training I have a definite 1 minute clock built into my
stride! But today I pushed through it and ran every step of my warm-up
mile before weight-lifting. I finished in just under 11 minutes. (That
doesn't mean I could keep it up for 2 more miles, but it's still a big
improvement.)

While I'm talking endlessly boringly about my own accomplishments, I
also want to muse over how many compliments I'm getting lately. I've
been barely losing any weight at all lately, about 2 pounds a month, but
all my measurements continue to shrink and I'm honest-to-god looking
slender in certain clothes. I'm rather enjoying the attention.

WTG Dally. With all this talk about running a 5K I'm beginning to think
about it again. I enjoyed the time I spent training for mine a few years
ago.

All this running makes me think I am missing something! Keep up the good
work. I am hoping that as I get lower in weight, I can take the pounding on
my knees and feet a little better to go back to the treadmill. What was the
hardest part for you - the legs tiring or in getting winded? I ask because
what does me in on cardio are my legs and feet first, breathing is almost
secondary. Elise

Congrats Dally,

And, you know we've always said - its not always about what the scale says.
Having multiple ways of measuring progress is important. You've got the
scale, the measuring tape, the clothes and the progress you've made in both
weight training and cardio endurance. Believe me - running does change
your body shape.

Can't wait to see you next year!

With me, it was getting winded. I say WAS...

Even when I was in junior high, I was never able to run more than 2 miles
without HATING it, and getting so tired and winded.

Then, when I graduated from college, I tried running. Just a mile. Every
day for a month.

It never got better. I hated it. And stopped.

Then a few years later I lost a lot of weight (35 lbs or so), and once
again, tried running, for an entire month, and hated it. So, once again, I
stopped.

Fast forward..., 18 years later, I hopped on the treadmill (mind you, I lost
50 lbs and was walking on the treadmill daily), and started running. At 7
mph. And it wasn't easy, but I worked myself up to 5 minutes at 7 mph.
Figured I could do more, but it wasn't as bad as it was 18 years ago.

Then I was talking to someone who told me he liked to run and run and run,
sometimes 1 1/2 hours at a stretch, but he did it at like 5.5-6 mph. So, I
tried 6 mph and ran for 10 minutes. Piece of cake. A few days later I went
for 20 mintues. Easy. Then 30. Still easy.

Yeah, my knees hurt a little, but not that much, and the best part was, I
wasn't winded! No side stiches, or hurting chest and lungs!

This morning, I did 36 minutes...I was going to go for more but ran out of
time.

So, all I can conclude is, I was always running too damn fast before!

Wish I had known then what I know now...

Of course, things may be different if I get on the road. Probably more
difficult than a treadmill.

The hardest part is difficult to explain: it's my heart rate getting too
fast. I'm not winded, I can still speak, and my legs don't have any
intention of quitting, but I just feel like I'd better slow down. When
I take my pulse and it's 194 (and I'm almost 40) I can't help but note
that it's something like 107% of my theoretical max heart rate.

I've personally recalibrated my max heart rate to be about 200 based on
the Borg Scale of Perceived Exertion, where 20 pretty well lines up with
200 for me. Check out and interesting discussion of the Borg Scale at
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/phys...d_exertion.htm

I prefer to train in the 150-175 range, and get undefineably
uncomfortable in the 180-195 range with sprints or when I really push
myself. (My resting pulse is around 65.) I feel like I need to train
my heart to handle the runs more than my lungs or legs. I'm not sure
how to do this.

Sometimes I'll feel a ping in my joints but it's a reminder to check my
form. My legs and hips are realigning themselves since losing so much
thigh fat.

Uhoh, then I'd better stop with the outrageous claims. Very FEW clothes
make me look slender, and pretty much none of the ones that show my
thighs. :-)

Super! 2 pounds a month loss - that's two more pounds than I lose monthly!

Downhill skiing is almost as good, right? And I can do THREE miles in 11
minutes! I know, I'm a wuss.
