What do you do when you have a surge to pig out at night? What do you
do??? What do you eat??? As I said in a previous post, a can of green
peas (200 calories) calms me down long enough to survive until the
morning.

Well, write down things you like to do besides pigging out and pick
one. I did this when I first started. I cut up little pieces of paper
saying things like: "call a friend", "take a bath", "play one of my
favorite songs" "meditate for 10 minutes", that sort of thing. I placed
them all in a bowl and I picked one. I call it my Hungry Bowl. I used
it over the weekend, for the first time in a month. It works.

Or, have a cup of green tea and settle yourself down. Turn on your
favorite type of music and sit, breathe deep and visualize a calming
place. You can go back to this place any time you feel the urge.

Thanks for the advice, SF. I've been struggling with temptation
constantly these past two months. Too many seasonal treats in the
office, too many parties, crowned by my boastful claim on New Year's
Eve that I could 'pack it away like I used to.' I can't. But I didn't
know it, and I tried. I was so sick New Year's Day that I had to cut
short my gym workout and go home. I guess, even at 275, I had "turned
away my former self" - the old me got left behind with the 112 pounds.

It's also a good idea if you're prone to binges to have a regular eating
schedule (meals and snacks) in order to prevent binge urges from actual
hunger. When I get an urge to eat, I do stop and think about when the last
time I ate was and if it's reasonable for me to be genuinely hungry. If it's
probably not reasonable then I find a distraction for a while and see if
things subside. SFRunner had a great idea to distract you from the urge.
Just know that binges can occur from actual hunger and it shouldn't be
ignored.

Oh, I know Neil. For the first 5 weeks of my weight loss, I went
without candy, none! And that was over Halloween! It was the first
Halloween of my entire life (I'm 47, 48 next month) that I didn't have
any candy. It wasn't easy, but what it did was get me over my chocolate
cravings. I never believed that when I heard it from others. But it's
true. The longer you go without candy, the less you want it. At least
it worked for me.

Well, the old me would eat a Tombstone pizza and a giant bowl of Co-Co
Puffs.

The new me has some low-fat microwave popcorn, or my favorite:
Triscuits and salsa. The Triscuits are good roughage, so they fill
you up.

Or even better...go to bed early before the night-snack urge wins.

Thanks for the advice. Last night's surge started after I walked in the
bread section of the supermarket. That's one of the best smells for me.
All of sudden, I wanted bread, and lots of bread! I was turning into a
monster. I left the supermarket as soon as I could and drove back home.
Once very far from that bread, I ate a can of green peas. That was a
close call. It's hard to reach the 1500-calorie plateau. I reached it a
few times but not more than twice in a row in 21 days. Today I got 1500
calories, All I need to stay there for two weeks in a row, and visible
results will show.
