Well, THAT Didn't Work!
I gave the "eat all the low carb stuff you want" routine a try yesterday,
and gained 2 pounds in the process. I also slept until almost 2pm, which is when my blood sugar is generally at its highest, so my fasting blood sugar is pretty high, too. It seems the earlier I get up, the lower my blood sugar reading is. We'll just have to see what happens tomorrow. It's milkman day, so I'll be setting the alarm and getting up several hours earlier than I did today. That should help with the blood sugar. Also, I don't feel ravenous today like I did yesterday, so I don't think I'll be eating nearly as much. I also think that part of the two pound leap may have been from the salt in the pepperoni and dill pickles. At any rate, I'm going to try going through Induction again. Halfway measures don't seem to be working. So, it's eggs and sausage or bacon for breakfast for the next two weeks. Boy, I get sick of eggs after two weeks, but I prefer a traditional breakfast. Might break with tradition and have deviled eggs, though. I'm not posting much, because I just don't have the concentration right now. I'll try to do better. Just wanted to keep you guys up to date on how things are going. thanks for the update carol............................
the times that are toughest for me, are when i am TOO CONCENTRATED on the food i eat and NOT the exercise i am getting. i DO remember to eat 2-3 times a day...............i DO NOT name my meals. Well, THAT Didn't Work!
Carol,
A sudden weight gain of 2 lbs can only be water--or the weight of the food you ate. Give it a couple days before you throw out that strategy. I'm back down 2 lbs under where I started after 4 days on that regimen. I gained a pound the first day too. More important, you have to remember that the longer you go without food, the higher your blood sugar will be. This has nothing to do with what you ate, but reflects a liver dump. Once you clear the glycogen out of your liver by doing the "very low carb, eat all you want" diet for 3 days, you won't be able to liver dump so easily any more and your blood sugar should start slowly coming down over the next week. It takes about a week to see if a change in diet is having an effect. One or two days will not give you that info. The one thing that is certain is that doing the very low carb (no more than 12 grams per meal) will bring down the blood sugar of just about anyone. But you have to clear the glycogen out of your system! -- Jenny 168.5/137 Low Carb 9/1998 - 8/2001 and 11/10/02 - Now http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean How to calculate your need for protein * How much people really lose each month * Water Weight Gain & Loss * The "Two Gram Cure" for Hunger Cravings * Characteristics of Successful Dieters * Indispensible Low Carb Treats * Should You Count that Low Impact Carb? * Curing Ketobreath * Exercise Starting from Zero * NEW! This same man went on a week's cruise and wound up in the hospital when he got back because of overeating. He bragged "I never missed a feeding the whole time!" and some of those "feedings" were at midnight, 6 a.m., 9 a.m.... My problem seems to be that I'm either not hungry at all, all day! Or, I feel starved. I've felt starved the past two days (my first low-carb days in awhile), and I gained 2 pounds the first day, and 1 more the second. Induction starts today (I'd already had a non-induction breakfast yesterday, when I decided to start fresh. Last night for dinner, I ordered Mandarin Beef at a Chinese restaurant we'd never tried. I could taste sugar in it, but I was very hungry from shopping, and hubby didn't care for it, and I didn't want to waste food, and ... you know how it goes. I'll work out today's menus on FitDay, and post them in another thread. And I'm gonna try the exercise bike - see how that goes. This was much easier the first time. I just this minute thought of putting a folded towel on it. That should work! I didn't even get my normal amount of exercise yesterday. Started my new meds (found out that my shrink's lost 30 pounds on Atkins, too!), and slept all last evening. Got up at 11 for an hour and a half and went back to bed. The only reason I'm up now is that I set the alarm so I'd be awake when the milkman arrived. I hope this is a temporary thing. i DO remember to eat 2-3 times a day...............i DO NOT name my meals. (breakfast, lunch etc) perhaps that would help? That does sound like a good idea. I'll have to give it a go. Thanks, Rosie! Well, THAT Didn't Work!
Carol,
Quite a few people with diabetes have posted in the past about taking a high protein snack before bed to stave off the "dawn effect." Basically at some point while you are sleeping you go low and that causes the reactive liver dump. Some people will see their blood sugar shoot up over 200 mg/dl while fasting that way. If you Google on "Dawn Effect" over on alt.support.diabetes you'll find zillions of postings and lots of suggestions.
