Default WW and vegetarianism

Hi All,

So glad to see so many smiling shiny faces. I joined WW again
after being off P for a while after a car wreck. I was horified to
read the section in the new book about vegetarianism:

Specifically, the part that reads (paraphrasing here) "some people
simply choose to cut out red meat." Argh!!! How can WW - which is
one of the best resources for nutritional guidence, IMO - imply that
anyone who eats flesh (albeit poultry and fish) is vegetarian? That's
simply crazy, and simply WRONG.

Did this bug anyone else?

BTW, I hate the new flex points system. Why do they keep changing the
plan?

-L.
(First weigh-in tomorrow - doing well, so far - I think!...but also
flying to Chicago for a "Girl's 40th Birthday Party" reunion with my
GFs from highschool - next week could be a wash...;p )

I was not bothered by it because I don't eat red meat and most of the
people who know me, keep calling me a vegetarian. I know this is wrong, you
know this is wrong, but to a lot of people, that makes me vegetarian. I do
eat fish and chicken but I have a neighbor who worries that I don't eat red
meat.

I had to laugh at this because my brother calls me a fake vegetarian -
because I eat meat analogs! But, he continued to call himself a vegetarian,
long after he started eating fish, shellfish and poultry.

Personally, I prefer to politely educate those I need to - my children's
preschool teachers, for example, need to know that picking the meatballs out
of the sauce is not the appropriate way to serve their lunch. The most
important lesson I can teach my children about their food choices is to show
tolerance and acceptance for those who make different choices.

About FlexPoints, it took me a while to get used to it, but I've gotten the
hang of it now. However, I dislike the way many companys make changes to
their product or service simply to reproduce the Hawthorne Effect in sales.

I'm in California and work in an environmental field, so I know a lot of
vegetarians. We have "vegetarians" ranging from people who simply don't eat
red meat, but will eat fish and/or poultry to people who don't touch any
animal products whatsoever, including milk and eggs and anything containing
animal products (even gelatin). I agree that people who eat meat aren't
total vegetarians - but in essence, people who eat eggs and drink milk
aren't really either. Where you draw the line is up to you. Whatever
happens, eating lower on the food chain is good for the environment, and, if
done carefully, good for your health. :-)

As for the new flex point system... I've actually adapted to a modified
version that sort of melds the old system and the new one. It seems to be
working. I don't know why they changed a plan that worked, but I suspect
that merchandising and marketing had something to do with it.

I was a little concerned but friends in natural say there are categories
because it makes it easier to adjust diets, the way WW sections it out makes
being vegetarian more understandable for many who are afraid of it, and MHO
could lead others down the path of eating less or no meat, Lee, respectfully

there are different types of vegetarians. and eatting just chicken and fish
and no red meat can make u one as well u can also still eat eggs and milk
and be vegetarian. ur called a lacto ovo vegetarian. i was one for almost 3
yrs but until low iron levels made me have to start eatting a little bit of
meet again i no longer am had to start because i would rather eat meet then
have to rememebr to take a pill everyday to bring it up. u don't have to
give up every type of meet to be vegetarian just red meat.

Hello L,
There are a number of people who abstain from eating red meat,
but who do eat poultry and seafood. Although other vegetarians
may not consider that eating plan to be a category of
vegetarianism, the folks who follow that plan may consider
themselves to be vegetarians. Should the WW book cater to the
view point of the larger vegetarian community, or to the WW
clients who have that particular eating style? Therein lies the
rub. In my opinion it is a good thing for the organization to
mention those clients in the chapter where they would expect to
find their needs addressed. Philosophy of eating is not really
the goal of WW. Weight loss thru meal management (of foods the
clients prefer) is the goal. This is not to disparage your own
point of view. I've also wondered why any one would consider
abstaining from only one type of meat to be vegetarian ... and I
am not one.

Marketing. You have to remember that, aside from anything else they

might
do, their primary purpose is to make money and sell support products.

In
order to keep introducing new "needful things" to sell their

constituency,
they keep changing the plan.

Well, yeah, I know...but it's stupid.
