Thank you, Roger. Taubes raises important facts that aren't widely
circulated, which need to be addressed.

Mad dog Republicans to the right. Democratic spider webs to the left. True conservatives, and liberals not to be found anywhere in the phantasmagoria
of the American political landscape.

America is not broke. The country is awash in wealth and cash.
It's just that it's not in your hands. It has been transferred, in the
greatest heist in history, from the workers and consumers to the banks
and the portfolios of the uber-rich.

So I take it that Taubes is accepted here as a legit authority on the
subject of weight loss ? I'm thinking of buying his 'Why We Get Fat'
book. Thanks for any suggestions.

Taubes doesn't presume to have all the answers, but he raises a number
of questions about the conventional wisdom of "low fat/high carb" diets,
cholesterol, and and weight gain. Well worth a read for anyone who eats.

There is the caveat that he is a journalist who has studied the field
extensively not a scientist himself. He's a scholar not a scientist, a
customer of the scientists who produce the data.

As long as you are okay with that caveat then yes he is accepted by most
here as a legit authority on the topic. He has spent a lot of time and
effort studying the topic and reaching conclusions. His material is
very good.

I will note that Dr Atkins also described himself as not a scientist who
was a customer of the scientists not a scientist himself. Dr Atkins was
a clinical physician not a scientist.

I do not consider not being a scientist as a disqualification for
expertise in the field and I encourage you to think in those terms as
well. Folks who are not scientists can and do deliver excellent work on
the topic. It takes scientists, clinicians, analysts all working
together. Gary Taubes is one of those analysts to me. A valued
contributor to the field.

The job of synthesizing the knowledge of the whole field of nutrition is
not frequently taken up by scientists who also have to labor under the
need to get their labs funded. Do you suppose that someone with Taubes
take on human nutrition is going to get any of his work funded by
Kellogg's, ADM or General Foods?

This would be the advantage of endowing a professorship in your will.
It gives independence to a scholar or scientist. It's a dream.

Or Quaker Oats or Con Agra or any other grain based food company.
There's the Beef Board I guess.
