Default Doug's Week 52 report - One year later, 82 lb lighter, last dayof my 40s...

Well, today officially marks the completion of the first 52 weeks of my
diet.

I am especially pleased that I have managed to go one full year without
having gone off my diet even once. (I designed my diet method - see below -
to make it easy to stay on. I think that keeping to a plan and losing slowly
is more important than losing rapidly.)

As some of you know, I started my diet on my 49th birthday (rather than
waiting until the next day to start!) as a birthday present to myself. That
was June 3, 2005. Last year I tipped the scales at 275 lb (125 kg).

Today is June 2, 2006. It's the last day of my 40s. Tomorrow is my 50th
birthday. And my new weight is 192.7 lb (87.6 kg), a total loss of 82.3 lb
(37.4 kg). I am happy that I made it to my birthday goal, of being "in the
80s" in kg by now!

Tomorrow if somebody is around I'll try to take a new "after" picture so I
can post an updated before/after shot, like I did at the half-year mark.

While I was away in St. Louis from the 5th through the 29th I "sort of
tracked my weight" on my friend's scale, but didn't keep up with my weekly
spreadsheet and graph. So like on my other trips, I am just going to assume
a linear interpolation for the in-between weeks and continue with my weekly
reporting, as usual.

This past week, my average daily calories came to 1414 calories/day. This is
somewhat lower than my before-trip average. It seems that while I was on my
trip I was actually eating about 200 calories *less* per day than I usually
do at home. I think I was worried since I wasn't able to do my regular
bicycle exercise and was being xtra careful to make sure my calorie intake
didn't get too high. Also, in the U.S. there were a lot of interesting,
low-calorie foods and snacks I hadn't tried before, so it was somehow easy
to keep at a low average calorie intake without feeling hungry.

Anyway, since I lost 0.8 lb this week this means my CPP (calories per pound
per day needed to maintain weight) was 11.9, which is somewhat higher than
my historical average.

My "rolling 4 week average" increased to 1.8 lb/week during my trip. I
attribute that to both being really good on my diet, and also just being
out-and-about and more active.

You can see my latest weight loss graph at
http://lerner.net/diet/weight20060602.jpg

The latest stats:

* Week 52 / Day 364
* This week's loss: 0.8 kg = 1.8 lb
* Weight (kg): 125.0 - 87.6 (minus 37.4 kg)
* Weight (lb): 275.0 - 192.7 (minus 82.3 lb)
* BMI: 41.3 - 28.9
* Percent body mass lost: 29.9%
* Percent complete to goal: 81%

Next goals to look forward to include breaking the 190 lb barrier into the
180s.

When that happens I think (my historical records are hazy at this point, and
I didn't have a digital scale back then) I will actually be at the lowest
weight ever in my entire adult life!

Thank you again everybody for all your support!!!

Here is a summary of my diet method, for reference:

* I figured my "goal weight needed calories" per week. Then I deducted 1,000
calories from the total and put them aside for a bonus and divided the
difference by 7. This gave me 1700 calories per day plus a weekly bonus of
1000 calories for flexibility. Having a bonus helps relieve the stress of
facing a fixed, rigid daily limit.

* I do daily exercise on my stationary bike. I deduct those displayed
calories from my daily total, which is an incentive to do regular exercise.
(When I am on travel and don't have access to my bike I try to do brisk
walks instead.)

* At the end of the week, if there is anything left over from my 1700*7
nominal calorie limit I roll it over to the next week. This adds just a
little more "fun and flexibility" to the diet, so some days I can eat a
little more without going off the plan.

Happy, happy birthday and congratulations to you on your marvelous
achievement. I'll be reaching the next decade next week, a few pounds
over goal but pretty close to it. You have been focused from the start.

Well, today officially marks the completion of the first 52 weeks of my
diet.

I am especially pleased that I have managed to go one full year without
having gone off my diet even once. (I designed my diet method - see
below -
to make it easy to stay on. I think that keeping to a plan and losing
slowly
is more important than losing rapidly.)

So like on my other trips, I am just going to
assume
a linear interpolation for the in-between weeks and continue with my
weekly
reporting, as usual.

This past week, my average daily calories came to 1414 calories/day. This
is
somewhat lower than my before-trip average. It seems that while I was on
my
trip I was actually eating about 200 calories *less* per day than I
usually

Anyway, since I lost 0.8 lb this week this means my CPP (calories per
pound
per day needed to maintain weight) was 11.9, which is somewhat higher than
my historical average.

* Week 52 / Day 364
* This week's loss: 0.8 kg = 1.8 lb
* Weight (kg): 125.0 - 87.6 (minus 37.4 kg)
* Weight (lb): 275.0 - 192.7 (minus 82.3 lb)
* BMI: 41.3 - 28.9
* Percent body mass lost: 29.9%
* Percent complete to goal: 81%

Next goals to look forward to include breaking the 190 lb barrier into the
180s.

When that happens I think (my historical records are hazy at this point,
and
I didn't have a digital scale back then) I will actually be at the lowest
weight ever in my entire adult life!

Thank you again everybody for all your support!!!

Here is a summary of my diet method, for reference:

* I figured my "goal weight needed calories" per week. Then I deducted
1,000
calories from the total and put them aside for a bonus and divided the
difference by 7. This gave me 1700 calories per day plus a weekly bonus of
1000 calories for flexibility. Having a bonus helps relieve the stress of
facing a fixed, rigid daily limit.

* I do daily exercise on my stationary bike. I deduct those displayed
calories from my daily total, which is an incentive to do regular
exercise.

Default Doug's Week 52 report - One year later, 82 lb lighter, last day of my 40s...

Wonderful post. You have done a great job of taking control of your weight.

So like on my other trips, I am just going to
assume
a linear interpolation for the in-between weeks and continue with my
weekly
reporting, as usual.

This past week, my average daily calories came to 1414 calories/day. This
is
somewhat lower than my before-trip average. It seems that while I was on
my
trip I was actually eating about 200 calories *less* per day than I
usually

Anyway, since I lost 0.8 lb this week this means my CPP (calories per
pound
per day needed to maintain weight) was 11.9, which is somewhat higher than
my historical average.

My "rolling 4 week average" increased to 1.8 lb/week during my trip. I
attribute that to both being really good on my diet, and also just being
out-and-about and more active.

You can see my latest weight loss graph at

The latest stats:

* Weight (kg): 125.0 - 87.6 (minus 37.4 kg)
* Weight (lb): 275.0 - 192.7 (minus 82.3 lb)
* BMI: 41.3 - 28.9
* Percent body mass lost: 29.9%
* Percent complete to goal: 81%
